WD TV Play Reviewed

Easy setup, Supports any TV (HDMI and AV outputs), Supports lots of local media types, Smartphone remote apps for iOS and Android, Plays local media from USB and DLNA servers

Relatively small number of apps that can't be user expanded, Does not support playback from network shares

Inexpensive streamer with wide format support for local playback

Western Digital WD TV Play review

With smart TVs becoming more popular, those with older sets they don't want to replace might want to look for something to add media playback features and online content from a separate box. When the WD TV Play arrived, we didn't really know what it...

Tiny, lower power use, cheap, great picture quality, good range of useful apps, USB input, built-in wireless, plays pretty much everything

A bit slow to navigate menus, bug sometimes crashes device and needs restart to recover

When the WD TV Play arrived, we didn't really know what it was going to do better than any other device. In fact, it turned out to be better than almost anything else we've used as a media player. It didn't encounter files it couldn't play via DLNA,...

Western Digital WD TV Play

An excellent value media player, but compromises have been made.

Attractive, intuitive UI ; Wide range of integrated streaming services ; Very cheap

No support for DTS audio ; Poor navigation for local media ; Remote has questionable layout

That said getting the WD TV Play up and running is nigh on foolproof, which means getting to your content is only minutes away.

WD TV Play Media Player WDBMBA0000NBK-HESN

This thing plays EVERYTHING! Unlike other players that can be picky. This will stream pretty much everything from my media server and it also has USB. I've had this for about 3 yrs now and she's still tick'n. I would like to see some firmware updates...

Plays everything USB cat5 and wireless Remote and phone app

Not much here. I sometimes it will "lock up" and boot fixes it. Hey its a electronic, it happens.

Decent little media player

I use this primarily at a second home that doesn't have cable or internet to stream video and audio to the entertainment system from an external hard drive. It works pretty well, although the UI could really use some improvement. The main screen is...

When you have thousands of video and audio files on a hard drive you have to page through the list which can take some time. If you know the exact title you can search, but since there is no keyboard on the remote you still have to arrow to each...

Need much improvement

I could not ask much more for the price I paid. I use it for netflix for the kids, it is very slow responding to the remote and starting up, freezes all the time. I would not buy it at the full price, but half the price in shell shocker was ok.

Very cheap at shell shocker price, netflix, play most media from NAS, Wifi biult in

Remote very unresponsive, freezes too much, slow navigation.
