Apple iPod series (fifth-generation update) review

Most of this review of the 5.5G iPod will cover new features and performance numbers. For a closer look at the basic design and base features of the iPod, read this review .

The enhanced iPod has the same sleek design with improved video battery life and brighter screen; it brings gapless playback to the masses; up to 80GB; new features such as instant search and enhanced games; movies now available in iTunes 7; excellent...

The Apple iPod has added no major functions such as FM radio, wireless, recording; small screen not conducive to movie viewing; proprietary USB cable; narrow native video-format compatibility; body is still scratch prone.

The amazingly low priced updated Apple iPod gets many under-the-hood improvements, but it's still not a true video player.

Apple iPod video review: Apple iPod video

The Apple iPod plays video Pay close attention to the new Apple iPod when you get one in your hands. Most of you will notice a design that's thinner, lighter, and sexier than its predecessor's , as well as a new screen that dwarfs the Click Wheel. A...

Incredibly thin and intuitive design; beautiful LCD; supports photo and video playback; seamless integration with iTunes, which boasts the world's biggest music catalog and a new video store; smooth video; lots of extra features, such as a world clock,...

No extras included, such as a dock, A/V cables, or a power adapter; poor battery life for video; slight delay when playing video; no guarantee that your non-iTunes Music Store video will play on an iPod, even after using converted third-party software.

Get the affordable, sleek, and sexy 5G Apple iPod for its audio virtues. Although video looks great, poor video battery life and a relatively small screen hamper its appeal to video heads.

Apple iPod

The chic chrome-and-ivory chassis found on the latest Apple iPod is lighter and thinner than the other hard drive players here, and it has a smaller footprint than any other hard drive unit we tested.

The iPod provided only about 9 hours of playback per charge on its rechargeable battery, and it's one of only two models in the survey that can't play WMA files. But the real dealbreaker for many buyers will be its stratospheric price tag. The iPod may...

Apple iPod review

Apple iPod

Best-of-breed design and interface; excellent playlist features; clean, configurable sound; smooth syncing with both Windows PCs and Macs via iTunes; organizes contacts; includes games; functions as an external drive; optional voice-recording and...

No FM or line-in recording; voice recording enabled with accessory; battery life compromised somewhat by small size; battery not user-replaceable.

We love almost everything about this beautifully designed player, but the battery life could be longer.

Apple iPod

The Apple iPod sounds like a dream come true-and for anyone with a love of music and a Mac that has a FireWire port, it is one. Although $399 places the iPod at the high end of the portable music player market, that investment buys you a stylish,...

High capacity ; small size ; fast ; FireWire interface siginificantly speeds syncing ; iTunes integration ; unique design ; works as a portable hard drive. cons

Apple iPod (10GB Scroll Wheel)

Introduction The first thing I noticed about the Apple iPod when I cracked open the box was a sticker right on the screen saying, "Do not steal music!" It dawned on me that this may be the best use of reverse psychology I have ever witnessed. The Apple...

"Unfair Warranty! These keep failing..."

My girlfriend had two IPod Touches fail with the exact same problem (the touch screen stopped responding) within 16 months of her original purchase. Apple wouldnt guarantee the (new) replacement for over 90 days. So she is now left with nothing after...

Obviously they are nice to use when they are working. Full of nice features etc. You can read all about them on lots of other reviews, presumably all posted by lucky people who still have a working ipod (or did, at the time of writing).

In my opinion, Apple seem to have a far inferior warranty policy compared to their rivals, and possible reliability issues.

Product Specifications

Smaller than ever (just 0.62 inches thick), the new iPod fits comfortably in the palm of your hand and slips easily into your pocket - and your life. At 5.6 ounces, it weighs less than 2 compact discs, and even many mobile phones. And yet the iPod gives you a huge hard drive. Do the maths: that's enough space to store three weeks of music - played continuously, 24/7 - or one new song a day for the next 20 years. Once again, Apple turns the portable digital music player market on its ear with hassle-free functionality and stunning, well-considered design that place iPod far ahead of the curve and the competition. Building on the success of the touch wheel (which made scrolling through an entire music collection quick and easy), the new iPod has been re-engineered with an all-touch interface for enhanced durability and sensitivity. With an LCD screen and buttons that feature a backlight for clear visibility in low-light conditions, iPod is designed for easy one-handed operation. So the best way to take an entire music collection anywhere is now even better. The 15GB and 30GB iPod models come with a dock that makes charging and syncing easier than ever - no more reaching around, looking for the right port. An elegant, convenient home base for iPod on a desk or connected to a home stereo system, the dock provides syncing via FireWire or USB 2.0, charging via FireWire and audio line out for connecting to powered speakers or a stereo system. Designed to give you the best portable digital music experience ever, the iPod delivers the highest sound quality from input to output. iPod supports the most popular audio formats - including MP3 (up to 320 kbps), MP3 Variable Bit Rate (VBR) and WAV - giving you access to a wide range of audio file types. And iPod is the only portable digital music player that supports the AAC format (Mac-only), which features CD-quality audio in smaller file sizes than MP3, so that even more songs fit on your iPod. The iPod now lets you do a whole lot more in addition to maintaining your contacts, calendar and to-do lists. iPod now includes Solitaire, Brick and Parachute, three great games you can play anywhere (a feature you're sure to appreciate the next time you're standing in a queue or waiting for someone). You can even use your own music as the soundtrack to a game. iPod also includes a notes reader that lets you download text-based information and read it on the screen. This way you can have the information you need - on everything from restaurant reviews to nightlife guides, and from news articles to exercise routines - at your fingertips. The iPod features a sleep timer, so you can fall asleep to your music. And with the iPod's new alarm clock, you can choose either an alarm tone or your favorite music to wake you up.
