Creative Zen Flash-Based MP3 Player

Gadget lover's player may lack Wi-Fi, but it has lots of other features, supports a wide array of formats, and accepts SD Cards.

Feature-heavy, SD Card slot for instant memory upgrades

One-handed operation a little tricky, Skimps on bundled accessories

But it's a great choice for gadgeteers and audiophiles alike. If the 16GB's $150 price tag is too rich for your blood, buy a lower-end Zen and make up the difference with SD Cards

Creative Zen

video player. In terms of general wow factor or ease of use, it's no iPod touch, but it does have a larger screen than the iPod nano and more features, including an FM radio and a voice recorder. The 4GB and 8GB ZEN flavors match or beat Apple's prices...

Bright 2.5-inch screen. SD memory card slot. FM radio and voice-recording capability. Supports unprotected AAC files

Erratic start-up times. No FM or line-in recording. Plays only WMV video files. Poor battery life

Place it next to an iPod nano and the ZEN looks positively bulky, but it also packs a larger screen and more features. And unlike the nano, the ZEN comes in a roomy 16GB capacity.

Creative Zen (32GB)

Editors' note: The body of this review has been updated to reflect added memory options and significant price drops.

The Creative Zen sounds fantastic and features a brilliant color screen capable of displaying photos and video. The player offers a smorgasbord of desirable extras such as an SD card expansion slot, an FM radio, a voice recorder, and a user-definable...

The Creative Zen only comes in black, the control pad feels cheap, and it doesn't come close to matching the max 60GB offered by the player it's replacing.

We're hard-pressed to find anything not to like about the Creative Zen. It's a great option for anyone looking for a great-sounding, pocketable MP3 player with an excellent, video-capable screen and plenty of extra features.

Creative Zen

Creative's stylish portable media player aims right at the new nano with its larger screen and SD Card slot.

Larger display than nano ; Good audio quality ; SD Card slot ; Compatible with unprotected AAC files

Long startup time ; Confusing navigation ; Display is dimmer than new nano's ; Static-filled radio reception

Creative Zen Portable Media Center

Player Type: Portable Media Player

Stylish looks. Exceptional battery life. Good audio and photo playback.

Screen is susceptible to glare and smudges. Recorded video looks bad on a full-size TV. No kickstand.

For a first iteration, the Creative Zen Portable Media Center delivers on the promise of PMCs and Windows Media Player 10.

Creative Zen MP3 Player Review

With great sound, a crisp and clear screen, and great video playback, and a good price, the Zen is a serious iPod competitor. Although the interface is not quite as sleek as the iPod, it is user-friendly and quite full-featured.

Review: Creative ZEN

Introduced in August 2007, Creative's flagship device is a capable digital media player in its own right, but is it a worthy successor to the Vision:M? Read my full ZEN review below to find out.

Creative did a lot of things right with the ZEN. It kept the screen size of its predecessor but dramatically increased the number of supported colors, updated the patented user interface without messing with what made it successful in the first place,...
