Hitachi SimpleTOUGH (500GB) external hard drive

The Hitachi SimpleTOUGH external hard drive's rugged enclosure and embedded USB cable make it a great companion for road warriors. If you plan to knock your hard drive about during travel, this would be a good choice.

Reasonable cost per formatted gigabyte, embedded USB cable, rugged enclosure ;

No optimised USB drivers, isn't bundled with a DC power adapter ;

The SimpleTOUGH has a relatively low cost per formatted gigabyte of 38.5c. By contrast the 320GB SimpleDRIVE Mini costs 34.1c while the LaCie Rikiki external hard drive has the lowest cost we have found of just 31.8c per GB

Hitachi SimpleTOUGH (500GB) review

There are no shortage of ruggedised hard drives - LaCie's Starck Mobile Hard Drive can be run over by a car without worries, and its Rugged All-Terrain Hard Disk will certainly survive knocks and bumps. Transcend's StoreJet 25M-R even claims to...

The Hitachi SimpleTOUGH external hard drive's rugged enclosure and embedded USB 2.0 cable make it a good option for carting around data, though style-conscious road warriors may want to look elsewhere.

The Hitachi SimpleTough is by far the toughest external hard drive we've tested. With a built-in USB cable and two-tiered data-security package, we have no issue recommending this device to shoppers looking for space and security

Conveniently integrated USB cable ; Local and online data back-up ; Rubber body can withstand 3m drops and a tonne of pressure

No FireWire port ; Larger-than-average design

We performed a simple data-transfer test to compare the SimpleTough with four other external drives in a similar price range. The test results place the SimpleTough right in the middle at 28.6MBps to read and 22.3MBps to write our 6GB mixed-media file...

this hard drive is great. it requires no external power, so all you do is take the usb lead out from the underside and plug it straight into your computer. there is no need to have to put any computer program in to run it, it just gets recognised by...
