Mossberg's new Zune review sounds familiar

Mr. Mossberg just handed down his verdict on the latest series of Microsoft Zunes. Those of you who shout him down with your flaccid cries of "fanboi" will want to turn away... now. Walt considers the new Zunes a "vast improvement" over Microsoft's ...

Microsoft Zune 80GB

With a large screen, wireless syncing, and better features than the iPod classic, Microsoft finally gets portable digital music right.

Large screen. Easy to navigate. Syncs wirelessly. Wireless player-to-player file sharing. Zune Marketplace is vastly improved. Customizable body

Low resolution for a large screen. Earbuds have microphonic issues. Zune Marketplace offers a limited video selection. Full wireless syncing capability will be added in a firmware update ; Watch the Zune 8GB and 80GB Video Review

The new Zune is trimmer, has a larger screen and increased capacity. Add its wireless abilities to the equation and you've got a player that (gasp!) trumps Apple's iPod classic.

Microsoft Zune 80GB and Zune Marketplace Software V. 2.1

Microsoft stepped up its Zune and its eye-catching software, making the second-generation device a serious iPod competitor.

Easy-to-use device and software ; Large, bright screen ; Simple device synching ; Easy to share and update music via Wi-Fi

Large, bulky size ; No included AC adapter ; Available only in black ; No over-the-air downloads

Microsoft Zune 8GB

Microsoft, seeing the futility in polishing turds, went back to the drawing board to design the second rev of the Zune. (If only they'd do the same for Vista!) Fortunately for early adopters, many of the new features and desktop software will be made...

Better controls; wireless auto-sync; Zune Marketplace greatly improved

Still tied to Zune Marketplace; wireless sharing still mostly useless

The Zune 8GB sounds every bit as good as the first Zune, and Microsoft has added support for tracks encoded in WMA Lossless. The 1.8-inch glass screen looks very sharp, but it’s also very small—especially when you’re watching videos—and the flash...

Review: Zune 80 and Zune 2.5 software

The Zune 80 is the most capable model but shoehorned between iPods.

Very large screen ; Best non-clickwheel, non-touch control scheme yet ; Zune 2.5 adds much-needed smart playlist, video, gapless audio support ; In-canal earbuds included in the box

Bigger than iPod, but screen isn't any sharper ; Sub-par battery life ; Wi-Fi still significantly underused ; Zune software still a half-measure: no new formats ; No Zune Marketplace for Canadians on launch ; Premium Headphones are simply adequate

In the past several months since the second generation of Zunes went on sale, Microsoft has been busy addressing longstanding complaints about the Zune and its software: version 2.5 adds auto playlists, gapless playback, and other features that the i

Microsoft Zune 80GB Digital Media Player

We've already been told that it's coming "Zune" to Canada, but how does Microsoft's sophomore entry into the MP3 player market compare against the iPods of the world? I had ...

With the noted exception of the integrated Wi-Fi connectivity (and all the associated functionality), this feature set is pretty much in line with the iPod Classic 80GB. Where the Zune wins, in this regard, is the fact that it has a much larger...

Microsoft Zune 8GB

Microsoft's flash-memory-based Zune player offers unique features in a sleek package for the Windows-loving crowd, but it's still no iPod.

Elegant user interface; FM tuner; wireless-sync capability; podcast support; nice screen; good audio quality; easy-to-use software

80GB Zune costs just $50 more; tricky center button; no Audible audio-book or WMA DRM9 support; Zune Marketplace lacks movie/TV downloads

Double your display real estate by adding a second monitor. It's a snap: Here's how

Microsoft Zune Review

Marketed as the "iPod Killer," the original Zune was anything but. However, the second generation Zune does stand a small chance competing with the industry leader, iPod. However, we still feel that Microsoft still has some ways to go.

Product Specifications

The Zune 80GB offers uncompromising portable video and audio playback together with a beautiful 3.2-inch screen, innovative touch controls, wireless sharing and premium headphones. Big screens are great for videos, but premium headphones are essential for music. Included with Zune 80GB are headphones designed to block out external noise. Kiss slow scrolling goodbye. The innovative new Zune pad makes browsing your device a blast. Fly effortlessly through your music, picture and video collections. Cut the cord to your PC with Wireless sync. Refresh your Zune with new content anytime you charge your device, through your home wireless network. Share full-length tracks of your favorite songs, albums, playlists, pictures and even audio podcasts with Wireless Zune-to-Zune sharing. Listen to the full track of any song you receive up to three times, and even pass along songs you receive to other friends nearby who have a Zune. If you like a song you receive, you can easily add it to your wish list and then buy it from your PC the next time you sync. Recorded TV or movies to go. Zune will import unprotected .WMV, .MPG4 and H.264 files into your video library. Also, if you're recording TV shows or movies with Windows Media Center in Windows Vista, you can import and sync them to your device. Load up your favorite videos and hit the road. Tune in to one of your favorite local stations while on the go or working out. Advanced tuning capabilities let you see the name of the song currently playing on select frequencies. Zune Marketplace: Featuring over 3 million songs, DRM-free MP3s, music videos, audio/video podcasts and more, your store is always open and just a mouse click away. Your games. Your music. Your way. Plug your Zune into your Xbox 360 and customize the soundtrack in your favorite games. You can also stream content in Zune software to your Xbox 360 using a wireless connection.
