Apple iPod Touch (2nd Gen)

Apple iPod touch (2nd generation)

By Tim Gideon

Award: Editor's Choice!

Apple's crown jewel player line gets slimmer, cheaper, and, uh, more fun.

Stunning, sprawling glass display. Access to App Store and iTunes Store via Wi-Fi. Built-in Internet browser. New Genius feature builds playlists for you

Very expensive. Fingerprint magnet. File support is still extremely Apple-centric ; Watch the iPod nano (4th Gen) and touch Video Preview

While the second-generation iPod touch is very similar to its predecessor, it has enough extra features, like Genius playlists and excellent games from the Apps Store, to maintain its standing at the top of the PMP heap.

Creative ZEN Mozaic

Creative ZEN Mozaic

By Tim Gideon

The Creative ZEN Mozaic is the latest example of Creative's long-standing tradition of developing good-looking budget portable media players. The Mozaic comes in 2GB ($59.99 direct), 4GB ($79.99), and 8GB ($119.99) capacities, and its control pad, as ...

Very affordable. Good-looking, interesting design. FM radio with 32 presets. Voice recorder.

Unintuitive, clunky user interface. Included earbuds are subpar.

The Creative ZEN Mozaic has plenty of features for its price, but don't expect the cool design of the player to extend to its user interface.

Creative ZEN X-Fi

Although saddled with a clunky name, Creative's ZEN X-Fi with Wireless LAN offers plenty of features including wireless capabilities at a great price. Sure, I was occasionally frustrated with the unpolished user interface and the overwhelming number ...

Streams and downloads music wirelessly. FM Radio and voice recorder. Quality earphones are included

User interface needs work. Most videos need to be converted with the included software. Loaded with buttons

Armed with wireless streaming features, but hindered by an irksome user interface, the affordable ZEN X-Fi is a solid player, but lacks the graceful navigation of devices from Apple or Samsung.

Samsung YP-S3

Samsung YP

By Tim Gideon

The Samsung YP-S3 takes its style cues from its good-looking big brothers, Samsung's YP-T10 and YP-P2. The slim, cell-phone-esque design is sure to appeal to fashionable folks who aren't tied to iTunes. And what's better, for only $100, you get 4GB of ...

Stylish design. Lots of storage for a low price. Excellent user interface. FM radio and recorder.

Small screen not ideal for video. Poor video support-conversion software needed. Touch-sensitive buttons can be unresponsive.

The S3 brings the typical sleek styling of Samsung players to a new level-and it all comes at a very reasonable price.

Samsung YP-S2

Samsung YP-S2

By Tim Gideon

The YP-S2, aka the Pebble, won't win any awards for sound quality or battery life, but it's a cheap, gym-friendly iPod shuffle competitor.

Small and lightweight. Cheap. Gym-friendly earphones. Can create playlists on the go.

Earbuds lack bass. Necklace earphone design not for everyone. Cable-free PC connection is awkward.

Awfully similar to Creative's ZEN Stone in looks, price, and performance, the Samsung YP-S2 is an excellent alternative to the iPod shuffle.

Finis SwiMP3

Finis SwiMP3v2

By Tim Gideon

Finis designs all sorts of aquatic sporting gear, so the $139 SwiMP3 digital music player isn't coming from the same minds that have engineered, say, the iPod or the Zune. That makes this waterproof MP3 player all the more impressive: It works well ...

Works underwater. Attaches to swim goggles for stable fit. Tunes are easy to load.

Overpriced for 256MB of storage. Supports only MP3 and WMA audio files.

The SwiMP3 is not the best digital audio player you can buy, but because it's waterproof and easy to listen to and use while swimming, it's in a league of its own.

Asus R300

Asus R300

By Craig Ellison

When you think about navigation devices, the brands names that likely immediately come to mind are Garmin, Magellan, TomTom, and maybe Mio. But motherboard stalwart ASUS is out to change that perception by introducing two new GPS devices. Our review ...

Multi-segment routing. Multiple vehicle and road profiles. Excellent language support. Route-saving feature

Lacks text-to-speech conversion. Bluetooth hands-free feature sounds muffled, and it wouldn't recognize contacts from my phone. FM transmitter doesn't work well

This stylish entry-level GPS device packs the features, but it won't cost you a fortune.

iRiver U15 L-Player

iRiver LPlayer

By Tim Gideon

The Lplayer from iriver will seem familiar to some people. At first glance, it looks like a smaller iriver Clix. The two players use the same D*click technologythe company's term for its innovative, practically button-free design. You navigate the ...

Compact design. Good-looking graphics. Easy, push-screen navigation. FM radio and recording. Voice recording

Tiny screen. Some menu options can be difficult to find. Video conversion software can mess up aspect ratios

A worthy follow-up to the venerable Clix, this iPod nano-esque player is a viable alternative for those not tied to iTunes.

Samsung YP-S5

Samsung YP-S5

By Tim Gideon

When the YP-K5 was released by Samsung in 2006, its unique built-in, slide-out speaker design was a real head turner. And though the device was bulky, it had strong battery life and even a pair of decent earbuds. The update, the new flash memorybased ...

Well designed. Excellent graphics. Intuitive user interface. Quality EQ. Built-in speaker.

Touch-sensitive buttons are not responsive enough. Small screen for video. Mediocre file support.

With its slide-out speaker, the S5 is a nice alternative to hauling a dock or speaker set. Slick design and an intuitive interface are compelling, but the player's weak file support will likely disappoint.
