Philips GoGear Opus 8GB

Could this be Philips' Magnum Opus?

The Opus isn't a bad looking beast in its own understated way, but there's something conservative about the whole look. If it were a car, the old SA5825 would have been a Vauxhall Vectra, and it wouldn't have hurt Philips to think outside of the box...

Philips GoGear Opus review

Philips' 8GB GoGear Opus is an updated version of our favourite MP3 player, the GoGear SA5285/02 (Labs, Shopper 251).

The Opus is an excellent- value MP3 player with great battery life and good sound quality.

Philips GoGear Opus review

Despite some appealing features, like support for the BBC's iPlayer and FM radio recording, the Philips GoGear Opus is let down by a sluggish menu system and disappointing screen. It hasn't got what it takes to hold its own against more stylish rivals

Support for iPlayer downloads ; Good sound quality ; Can record from built-in FM tuner

Below-average screen ; Boring design

Conclusion The Philips GoGear Opus isn't a bad little player, but it's not a great one either. We like the iPlayer support and FM radio recording, but it's let down by its relatively poor screen and sluggish menu system. Overall, it's not really a...

Philips GoGear Opus 8GB review

Philips' GoGear Opus 8GB is a sharp-looking audio and video playing portable with a 2.8in screen.

A decent but not overwhelmingly impressive effort from Philips. The Opus looks great and is a pleasure to use; it's also temptingly priced. Unfortunately sound quality with the bundled headphones could be better, and that's a bit of a dealbreaker when...

The slow interface probably kills what would have been an excellent player with decent format support and great sound quality.

Very neutral sounding ; Good bundled in-ear headphones ; Build quality is solid ; Uses standard mini-USB ; Decent software bundle

Awkwardly positioned headphone port ; Menu navigation slow ; Average screen quality ; Limited file support

Review: Philips GoGear Opus

The Philips GoGear Opus promises great sound quality and bundles a pair of premium in-ear headphones. But is it really as good as it sounds? We find out.

Very neutral sounding; good bundled in-ear headphones; build quality is solid; uses standard mini-USB; decent software bundle

Awkwardly positioned headphone port; menu navigation slow; average screen quality; limited file support

The Opus is a decent player, but it comes with some noticeable flaws. While it delivers great audio quality, provides good software and comes bundled with decent headphones, the sluggish interface ruins the entire enjoyment experience. We would have...
