Samsung Galaxy Player 4.2

Samsung's Galaxy Player 4.2 is a good iPod touch alternative, offering a large screen, great speakers and easy access to Android games and apps.

Click to EnlargeIf you want a portable media player and gaming device in one with a big screen, the Samsung Galaxy Player 4.2 is a good buy at $199. Unlike the equally priced iPod touch, the 4.2 also has a removable battery and expandable media...

Good battery life ; Plays media well ; Easy to use

Too quiet ; Poor camera ; Low storage capacity

Samsung has made a well rounded device that does everything you ask of it. Sadly there just isn't anything special to get excited about

Samsung Galaxy Player 4.2

A viable Apple iPod touch alternative, the Samsung Galaxy Player 4.2 is a great way to run Android apps without buying a smartphone.

Well-built. Runs all Android phone apps. Solid sound quality. Acts as smart remote for Samsung TVs

Two-year-old specs. No HDMI output. Lackluster camera

If you want to run 400,000 Android apps and don't want to invest in a smartphone, the Galaxy Player 4.2 is among your better bets. It's less expensive and more capable than the older Galaxy Player 4.0 and the Sony NQZ-Z1000 ($249, 3 stars), and has a...

Samsung Galaxy Player 4.2 Review: Great All Around Android Player

Available in two new sizes, the Samsung Galaxy Player is a Wi-Fi-connected Android media player that complements Samsung's popular Galaxy phone lineup--with the advantage that it doesn't require you to be tied to a phone contract or monthly data fees....

Thin and light ; Good-quality screen is big but not too big ; Expandable storage

Mediocre cameras ; Plasticky, cheap-feeling build

With its generous display, expandable storage, and thin-and-light design, the Galaxy Player 4.2 is a solid option for anyone looking for an Android-powered media player.

Samsung Galaxy Player 4.2 (black)

Editors' note: The majority of this review is repurposed from CNET's review of the Samsung Galaxy Player 4.0 , which offers a slightly smaller, 4-inch screen and many of the same features as the Galaxy Player 4.2.

The Samsung Galaxy Player 4.2 offers most of the capabilities of Samsung's popular Android smartphones, minus the phone and monthly fees.

Both the software and the processor are relatively old by smartphone standards. Parents should know there are no safeguards included to restrict access to age-inappropriate content.

When it comes to competing with Apple's iPod Touch media player, the Galaxy Player 4.2 is Samsung's best effort yet, but it's still playing catch-up.

Samsung Galaxy Player 4.2 Review

The expansion of the Samsung realm of wi-fi-only smart devices continues with the Galaxy Player 4.2, complete with two front-facing speakers, Android 2.3 Gingerbread, and a lovely display. This device is essentially a Galaxy S II at half-power and...

Here at $199 this may well be the best deal on the mobile market if you’re not in the market for a tablet-sized device. Later this year we might be seeing sub-$199 tablets at 7-inches with next-level processing power. For now, $200 with no contract for...

Samsung Galaxy Player 4.2 Review

Samsung has continued its push of Android WiFi devices for the media consumption crowd with their all-new Galaxy Player 4.2 iPod rival. The Galaxy Player 4.2 aims to take on media players of all shapes and sizes coming with great specs, a large screen,...

If we had to choose a Galaxy Player from the Samsung lineup this new 4.2 would clearly be it. The 3.6 and smaller options are too small now we are used to large screens, and the 5.0-inch model is a bit large and thick. Compared to the competition like...

Samsung Galaxy Player 4.2 Review

As we've plainly pointed out in our review of the Samsung Galaxy Player 3.6, it would astound us to know that someone would even fathom choosing it over an entry-level Android powered smartphone from any of the prepaid carriers out there. Frankly,...

Good battery life ; Better build quality

General choppy performance ; Shoots muddy photos & videos

We’ve said it before people and we’ll continue to say it again – well, that’s unless a future variant is outfitted with better hardware. On the outside, it’s fairly evident that the Samsung Galaxy Player 4.2 is a beefy looking dedicated media device,...

"Generally great device, but--"

Overall, this is great. Considering, it's not as laggy as I thought it'd be. So far, I haven't had any speed issues or freezing. Everything's great, but I'm curious about the memory. The 8GB model has only 4.62GB available for use. Luckily, I had an...
