Apple iPod Touch (1st Gen)

Finally the iPod touchs empty home page has all the iPhone apps that were originally denied us.

As an iPod it's lovely, but it's as a WiFi device that the touch really excels. Now you can browse the web with a device you can hold in your hand and fit in your pocket, provided you're in range of a WiFi hotspot, of course. The Safari web browsing ...

Apple iPod Touch (1st Gen)

The key feature, aside from the quite lovely 3.5-inch display, is the device's WiFi capabilities

Very attractive ; Groundbreaking features ; WiFi enabled

Low storage capacity ; High price

This all means that if there's no WiFi access available then you've just spent £200 on a high maintenance, low capacity PMP. The calculator's nice though and works offline..

Samsung YP-K3

The controls are excellent and the interface is a joy to use

Looks great ; Simple operation

Quite pricey

Our only minor whinge is that you only get 2GB capacity for your £80. Other than that, it's one of the most desirable MP3 players on the market

Accustic Arts TUBE-DAC II

Everything about the construction of this unit is deluxe, from the very positive control switches to the uniformly high quality of components inside

Detailed, tonally near-perfect and possessed of both delicacy and authority ; Confident across a wide range of musical styles

Occasional trace of high treble hardness

Occasional trace of high treble hardness

Samsung YH-820

Not all hard disk MP3 players are created equal.

Not flash-based ; HDD ; Lightweight and cute ; Voice recorder

Slow to find tracks ; Cheap earphones ; Poor playback time

It's great that this unit charges to full power in less than three hours, but we only got the same amount of playback from it. In layman's terms, that's two Moby albums, Sgt Pepper's and a Kate Bush retrospective. Is this better than an iPod mini? No. ...

Hercules Mobile DJ MP3

The most obvious flaw with the Mobile DJ MP3 is in the sliders used for the crossfader and volume/pitch

Portable

Poor sliders ; No on-board storage

This may be aimed at amateurs, but they're going to find it difficult to produce anything other than an unbearable beat clash. If you're serious about DJing, grab one of Hercules' better consoles, otherwise we'd suggest finding a less complex hobby

SanDisk Sansa Clip

This gadget has a style all its own

Good volume controls ; Handy clip ; Simple controls ; Cheap

Not much storage

It gets its name from the clip on the back, so you can attach it to the collar of your coat. With 1GB of space on offer - a 2GB version costs £35 (inc. VAT) - this isn't a mass storage device, but it's fine for the gym. With a dedicated volume button ...

SanDisk Sansa View

The Sansa View is the best SanDisk MP3 player yet

Looks and feels great ; It's a pleasure to use ; It's slim

Videp playback isn't great

And what else is new- Well, the View is also gorgeously slim in comparison to the older models. And that's despite the decent battery life and the 16GB of flash memory inside

Apple iPod Nano (2nd Gen)

The Nano doesn't do video - even if it could, the screen's too small for it to be watchable

Good battery life ; Simplicity to use

Restrictive iTunes software ; It just plays music

It's a triumph of design, but wipe the drool off your chin and have a careful think about what you really want. Of everything here, this'd make the best gift for someone else, but possibly not yourself

Archos 404

This multimedia player boasts no less than 30GB of storage

Will play WMV and DivX video, as well as WAV and MP3 audio, 3.5in. 320 x 240 LCD display capable of crisp colours, Great-quality audio (if decent headphones used), MPEG-4 recording from external, Very well built and low (just 190g) weight

H.264 and MPEG 1/2 video support require £13 'plug-ins', AV input/output cables are (expensive) options, Screen ratio is 4:3, and not 16:9., Camcorder footage can be 'smeary', LCD viewing angle is somewhat narrow

The Archos 404 is a great little device that's certainly more convenient than a portable DVD player - and better for video than an iPod
