Review: Everex Cloudbook

Everex's Cloudbook is a scrappy fella that could pose a challenge to its only serious rival if more time is spent perfecting the rough cut...

So small you don’t know it’s there. Decent keyboard. 30GB of storage puts it in a category of its own. Cheap and cheerful

Software setup not fully baked. WiFi stability roulette. Slow to boot, slow to launch. Mangy desktop configuration. Small, oddly-placed trackpad

Everex CloudBook Review

Starting at a mere $399, the Everex CloudBook marks the latest entry to the expanding world of UMPC-type subnotebooks at affordable prices. With a 7-inch display, 1.2GHz processor, and 30GB hard drive, the CloudBook certainly doesn't make a very good...

Excellent high-resolution scaling on the tiny screen ; Innovative design

Very low performance ; Included gOS operating system is a joke (a bad joke at that) ; Horrible touchpad interface ; No easy upgrades, opening chassis voids warranty ; System gets too hot ... overheats and stops working ; Loud cooling fan that is...

At first glance the CloudBook is an impressive design with some innovative features and some reasonably impressive specs for the $400 price tag. However, upon closer examination it's clear that VIA and Everex had to make a number of sacrifices to bring...

Everex CloudBook Review

With a 7-inch display, 1.2 GHz processor, and 30 GB hard drive, the Everex CloudBook certainly doesn't make a very good desktop replacement computer, but it does look like one impressive little road warrior. Does the CloudBook perform better than the...

As both an editor for a laptop review web site and as an average consumer I am in love with the low-priced UMPC-type subnotebook market. Laptops like the Everex CloudBook, the Asus Eee PC, and soon-to-be released subnotebooks from other manufacturers...

Everex Cloudbook review

Unveiled at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas in January this year, the Everex CloudBook matches the ultra-successful Asus Eee PC's weight, screen and keyboard size, as well as its reliance on a Linux operating system, open-source applications...

At present, we'd recommend the Everex CloudBook only to experienced Linux users who will view the inevitable hours they spend hacking their laptop as recreation, not hassle.

Works As Expected

Basic setup is simple right out of the box (Wireless LAN, etc...). I was expecting the small keyboard, so no biggie. I wasn't expecting a 3-month delay and to still have problems with the interface being too big for the display. I'm keeping gOS since I...

Extremely portable. Good battery life. WiFi+Wired LAN. Pre-installed with almost everything needed. Simple-enough setup (if you can see all the buttons). Recognizes all peripherals installed via USB (thumb drives, mice, HDDs, etc...). Built-in SD slot....

800x480 resolution is too small for some dialogs (as mentioned) including the time-zone dialog that is displayed at initial boot-up. Linux+Gnome has a heck of a learning curve for the un-initiated

Hardware's great, software sucks

This product shouldn't have been released with this gOS distribution in its current state. Everex should have taken another quarter or two to do it right and clean up the interface so it works well on the small screen even if that meant launching...

Very small, and relatively cheap. Very light. 30 gigs of storage is a nice step up from the competition at a similar price point. Windows drivers available. 3+ hour run time

gOS was not optimized at all for 800x480 (other than setting the default resolution). Dialogue boxes don't fit on the screen, can't read the google toolbar agreement, 50% of firefox display is consumed by toolbars. Gives Linux and Everex a bad name....

Great 'portable' PC

Like Jaffrey, I got my for the same deal. Got it 2 days after I placed my order (live in the midwest). Newegg rocks (would have been sweet deal if free ship). Installed XP Prof SP2 without a hitch with an external DVD drive. There are ways without one...

Size/Weight ; Easy to install XP/Office with ext DVD/CD player ; Impressed with screen resolution ; Storage (HD vs 4/8G on the eepc) - need for programs and files

gOS is terrible ; keyboard can be cramped - don't expect to touch type very fast/long on it ; Keyboard flexes somewhat ; Only 2 USB port ; DVI instead of VGA port (my work projectors are VGA)

Wicked little machine.

Bought this for $349 last week. Had a shipping problem, but after a little coaxing, Newegg took care of it. If you're a student like I am, this is a great little machine to take along for the day. It weighs about 2 pounds, and seems to get about 4...

Compact, nice design, easy to stash in a backpack along with books

Runs a bit warm after a while

Nice

If the battery goes below a certain % it just stops. No warning so beware. I would not recommend this machine to weak computer users because of the operating system. I have Ubuntu on one of my computers so it was easy for me to set up and use. Google...

Small and light. 30 gig hd, furnished software (it has chess), and from the looks it is built to last. Only time will tell

Wifi is very weak. I have only 73% signal 5 feet from my router. It works all over the house at about 50% so that's ok, but I would doubt it has much range which would be bad if you're a heavy wifi user. (see below for a fix) Also, no extra batteries...
