Resident Evil: The Mercenaries 3D review [3DS]

Resident Evil has always polarised opinion for one reason or another, and spin-off title The Mercenaries 3D won't go any way to changing that. Until now merely a bonus mode featured in three previous titles in the series, it's been transformed by...

Review: Resident Evil: The Mercenaries 3D (Nintendo 3DS)

Let's see if it succeeds.

Resident Evil: The Mercenaries 3D comes across as a game that could have been better than it ends up, as the additions made to the Mercenaries formula make for some great add-ons, but in the end, the game is hurt by some lacking depth and some poor...

Resident Evil: The Mercenaries 3D

High-score gameplay never felt so visceral.

Addictive high-score gameplay ; Local and online co-op ; Lots of unlockables ; Very brief but good Resident Evil: Revelations demo

Light on content ; Weak level variety

Gotta say, love the hell out of this game. It's fun to just pick up and play, and he's right- near the end the game gets TOUGH. Unlocking and leveling skills is addicting, and trying to get S ranks with every character on every mission is going to take...

Resident Evil: The Mercenaries 3D

A solid port of the Mercenaries mode for a handheld system, but not without a few mistakes.

One last sticking point is the quality of the audio, which overall is pretty poor. The effect is the same coming out of the 3DS speakers or listening through headphones. Everything sounds like it has a small echo to it, and the FX on the guns you use...

Resident Evil: The Mercenaries 3D

Based on the same-titled shooter modes featured in earlier Resident Evil games, 2011's Mercenaries for Nintendo 3DS swaps the series' survival-horror pacing for action-driven, seek-and-kill missions. The game is composed of stages taken from Resident Evil

Resident Evil: The Mercenaries 3D review

Resident Evil: The Mercenaries 3D should have been a cause for jubilation. Finally we have a game that shows what the 3DS can do, proving that Nintendo's newest handheld can handle graphics of Resident Evil 4 calibre, if not quite Resident Evil 5....

Strong game mechanics, graphics, good use of 3D

For those that want more than just high scores, you might find it too repetitive

Resident Evil: The Mercenaries 3D is a technically impressive zombie-blaster with excellent graphics and some strong game mechanics. What it is, however, is really only of use to the most hardcore Resident Evil fan and the kind of high-score obsessive...

Resident Evil: The Mercenaries 3D review

Largely a repackaging of old content, The Mercenaries 3D is a competent co-op shooter that ultimately falls short due to a severe lack of meat on its bones.

Resident Evil: The Mercenaries 3D

It's easy to appreciate what's at the Core of Resident Evil The Mercenaries 3D. Despite the mercenaries mode essentially being a mini game, it always promoted significant replayability and, most importantly, fun. The Mercenaries 3D has expanded this...

There is a lot of potential in Resident Evil The Mercenaries 3D. The actual concept and implementation of the mercenaries mode is great, but, as it stands, only as an addition to a more complex game. It simply didn't make the transition from mini-game...

Resident Evil: The Mercenaries 3D

The first appearance of Mercenaries, in the form in which it exists here on 3DS, came upon completing Resident Evil 4. This bonus mode suddenly appeared out of nowhere and turned what was already one of the all-time great action games into a package of...

Visually it looks and moves fine, albeit with the slight tendency to slow down at exceptionally busy moments, while the 3D effect is excellent. Online co-op is also a welcome feature that does provide a good excuse to play the same missions again,...

Resident Evil: The Mercenaries 3D - horribly addictive

Shooting zombies for points and pleasure is its own reward in Capcom's portable spin-off from the classic Resident Evil 4 and 5 mini-game.

Controls work very well and there's just enough to the characters, weapons and skills to keep you addicted. Excellent co-op mode works well online

Not enough maps, missions, or characters. In fact not enough content full stop, with no story and no online leaderboards. Revelations demo is very short

On paper it's a cynical cash grab while everyone waits for Revelations, but despite the price this is a fun and addictive score attack shooter.
