Verizon Hub

Verizon Hub

By Zach Honig

The Verizon Hub is an all-in-one device that could become your home's new communications center. It combines the basic functionality of a connected digital photo frame and a calendar with advanced communications features such as unlimited text and ...

Elegant interface. Visual voice mail. Doubles as a digital photo frame

Pricey for what you get. Limited streaming content, Web-connected features. Purchase and use limited to Verizon Wireless customers

The Verizon Hub is on the right track toward a one-stop home phone/digital media kiosk, but poor integration, high cost, and a required Verizon Wireless subscription limit its broad appeal.

VoicePulse

VoicePulse

By Rick Broida

This VoIP offering costs considerably less than a basic telco service but gives you a lot more bang for the buck.

Very good call quality. Lets you choose from a list of available phone numbers. Advanced call-hunt and do-not-disturb features. Many features can be activated or deactivated from your phone.

No price break for prepaying annually. Stark, uninviting control panel. Higher-than-average international rates. Static during heavy file-swapping.

Though not a standout among Voice over IP providers, VoicePulse delivers reliable phone service and enough features to satisfy most residential users.

AT&T Video Share

AT&T Video Share

By Sascha Segan

Lets you beam live video between AT&T phones. Works well.

Expensive. Works only in some cities, with some phones. No two-way video calling.

AT&T's live video-sharing service works well, but unfortunately, it's way too expensive for heavy use.

Internal antenna. Easy to remove SIM.

No UMTS roaming. Drops to EDGE more quickly than the Sierra AirCard.

The Novatel U730 is a good HSDPA card, though it drops to EDGE when HSDPA signals are very weak.

Good performance in weak-signal locations.

Long, slightly awkward antenna. No UMTS roaming.

The Sierra 860 doggedly hangs on to weak HSDPA signals, making it the better option of Cingular's two high-speed network cards.
