Sony SmartWatch 3 review: dull design, but great for runners

This here is the Sony SmartWatch 3. That might make it sound like it's the third iteration in a line of gadgets, but really, it's the first. That's becau

Built-in GPS is ideal for runners and other athletes ; WiFi and NFC make this more future-proof than other Android Wear devices ; Relatively long battery life ; Display is easy to read in direct sunlight

Drab design ; Screen isn't as vibrant as on some other smartwatches ; Not many Android Wear apps currently make use of the GPS, WiFi or NFC

Sony's latest smartwatch won't be for everyone, what with its dull design and muted screen. Still, this is currently the only Android Wear device with a built-in GPS radio, making it a smart choice for runners and other athletes interested in tracking...

Sony Smartwatch 3 ( black)

The SmartWatch 3 has an improved design -- including better waterproofing and interchangeable straps -- and crucially, Sony has ditched its clunky and unpleasant custom interface.

The Sony SmartWatch 3 has built-in GPS to track your workout without needing your phone. It's waterproof, has a built-in USB port for charging without a dock and runs Android Wear smoothly.

Its screen is pretty awful, with poor colours and viewing angles. Its plain, square design makes it much less stylish than the LG G Watch R and it doesn't have a heart-rate monitor built in.

Although its ability to use GPS to track your run is handy, its poor screen, uninspiring design and lack of a heart-rate monitor means the SmartWatch 3 doesn't impress over its more luxurious Android Wear competitors.

Sony SmartWatch review

The Sony SmartWatch is an intriguing device — a secondary display for your Android-powered handset that provides quick access to notifications from select apps and services on your phone. It's also able to show you who's calling or texting, control...

Better looking than most smart watches ; Definite geek chic factor ; Comfortable ; Works seamlessly with a recommended handset ; Music controls are a nice touch

Software is overly complex to set up ; No guarantee of future compatibility ; Apps are of limited use ; Initially confusing ; Expensive

The successor to the LiveView adds a few more features, but is it as smart as it claims?

Sony Smartwatch 3 Review: The Best Android Wear Watch At The Moment

It feels much longer, but it's been less than 6 months since Android Wear hit the market. They have stealthily crept into use without much fuss, despite revolutionising the wearables market. Reducing the time spent interacting with your phone, but...

The battery receives a small bump to 420mah, which hardly seems a huge deal given the LG watch had 400mah when it hit the shelves. With improvements to the screen and internals, the claimed 2 days of battery life is easily achievable. Where a day of...

The price tag on Sony’s SmartWatch Accessory is Rs. 6,299, which is in a little bit of a grey area as high end accessories go. It certainly does have it’s plus points, but on the down side, it should have had an audio out option to simplify the user...

Sony SmartWatch review

We can't help but notice how similar it looks to the iPod nano, launched two years earlier. The screen resolution is rather low at only 128 x 128 pixels, about half that of the iPod nano's 240 x 240 pixel display.

The Sony SmartWatch is a cool and attractive gadget, one that you want just for the sake of it. However, it's more than just a shiny touchscreen watch offering plenty of apps and functionality. The downsides are a slightly bulky design and the need to...

Sony SmartWatch

The Sony SmartWatch enters the realm of usability thanks to recent software updates, but it's still more of a smartphone accessory than a solid, stand-alone timepiece.

Sleek, stylish look ; Wide range of wireless functions notifications, call handling and music control made possible by a Bluetooth smartphone connection

Needs an Android smartphone connection to function or even keep the time ; Not compatible with iOS ; Display can't be read in sunlight ; Needs to be charged daily
