Brother MFC-5440cn

If you're looking for an all-in-one (AIO) for your small or home office, or to serve as a personal AIO in a larger office, the Brother MFC-5440CN ($130 street) is bound to catch your eye. Not only is the price right for those on a tight budget, the...

Prints, scans, faxes from PC. Standalone copier and fax machine. Network connector. Automatic document feeder

Slow for both business applications and photos. Output quality is below par

The Brother MFC-5440CN's truckload of features includes a network connector and automatic document feeder, but it's notably slow, and its output quality is slightly below par.

Total Garbage

Oh, man this thing is bad.

Looks nice

Windows Driver will not install even if firewall and anti-virus are off (Brother's suggestion - unprotect my computer) ; Docs say to turn off suspend when printer connected so I can waste power ; If black cart not plugged in and full will not work ; ARGH

POS Had 4, all have ink blockage issues.

The programing that disables starting my computer with printer turned on is something unique to my computer, but is entirely related to the printer programing. They have no idea, and claim no responsibility. Did not start until installed program, and...

I liked the separate ink cartridges for each color. Actually had reasonably ink usage amounts

First two I had, Brother replaced due to blockage in ink (red). Replacements now down due to same problem (red on one, yellow on other). Program has a glitch in it that will not allow my computer to crank up if the printer is turned on

good printer and scanner. all-in-one functions!

it is good for lots of copies. I use black copy most of the time to save color ink. you can get ink really cheap for this machine. about $1 each color. (been using cheap ink for 4 years). fax options are good. To get detailed scans or prints, just use...

lots of copies. get ink really cheap: $1. (been using cheap ink for 4 years). fax good. better prints, use the software options: single pass and "enhanced". alot of custom scan settings run from the driver program. lots of output file types

the yellow looses its "yellowness" over the years. maybe tune-up would help or actual "brother" ink for yellow? 24 hr cleaning can wake you up (user selectable) Have problems with a 2nd scan. lines in printout if you don't print weekly or monthly

expensive failure

worked for about a year, then got multiple streaks on copies and faxes that went thru the document feeder. estimated cost to repair is about the same as the cost of a new unit. should have been advertised as "disposable".

worked for a while

too costly to repair

Decent for it's price

This would be a good home printer but for an office; not so good. The USB is oddly placed and actually snakes into the inside of the printer. I've found this to be case with many Brother printers. The most frustrating defect is that it doesn't print...

Cheap, easy to use

doesn't hold much paper, oddly placed USB cable

will not print black unless color cartridges are replaced

I have never been so mad at a machine in my life. Works great until it decides you should buy some more ink fot it. Not that you need any more ink. It just decides that you should buy some more and will not work until you do. Ingenious way to make a...

cheap. prints ok until you need ink

the cartridge replacement issue. PC/user interface stinks

Will not print once ANY colour is 1/2 depleted

You need to replace all depleted colours before it will work at all. NO scan, copy, print, fax when ANY colour is low....nice NOT! Brother is off my list.

easy to set up

ink is expensive, no way of just printing in black, Duh

Works well, *horrible* ink use

While this printer functions satisfactorily, it's ink use makes it an unacceptable long-term solution.

Solid performance in all areas for decent price

Incredibly *bad* ink usage
