Brother MFC-5840cn

The Brother MFC-5840cn offers a network connection, ADF, memory card slots, and more, but is relatively slow, with less than ideal output.

Lots of features for the price. Built-in network port. ADF. Prints directly from memory cards. Works as a printer, scanner, standalone fax, and copier.

Relatively low output quality for an ink jet AIO. Slow performance, particularly over a network, both for its price and for ink jets in general.

Brother MFC-5840CN Printer

Priced at a modest $200, the Brother MFC-5840CN offers a host of features perfect for office tasks. Besides offering built-in networking, the unit lets you drop 35 sheets into its automatic document feeder or lift the cover to scan larger documents,...

Good value overall

Slow speeds

The Brother ran slow across the board. Text printed at a sluggish 3.4 pages per minute--far below the 6.2 ppm average for the nine MFPs we tested for the June 2005 chart. Color graphics emerged at a snail's pace of 1.1 ppm, slower than any other model...

Brother MFC-5840CN

The MFC-5840CN's built-in networking lets you share it as a printer, scanner, fax, and memory card reader.

The Brother MFC-5840CN is a good value for a networked MFP, but slow speeds and middling print quality limit its usefulness in an office setting.

Brother MFC-5840cn review

Brother MFC-5840cn

Roomy, dual-input paper trays; automatic document feeder (ADF); Ethernet port; media-card slots; bargain price.

Crummy output quality; slow print and scan speeds; ugly design.

We love this all-in-one's low price and office-appropriate features, but we can't overlook its poor performance and dismal output quality.

It's affordable, easy to use, and full of professional features, but this all-in-one printer scans and prints like an amateur.

This network-ready multifunction is easy to use and feature packed, but it won't please print-quality purists.
