MFC-790CW

Brother's $180 MFC-790CW color inkjet multifunction printer has a tempting array of goodies, but offers lackluster performance. Despite its aspirations, the MFC-790CW can't compete with other machines in its price range, such as the HP OfficeJet J4680.

Inexpensive; touchscreen control panel Wi-Fi connectivity; dedicated photo tray

Agonizingly slow text printing

Given its low price and interesting features, the Brother MFC-790CW could have been a contender. But its plodding performance can't be ignored

Review: Brother MFC-790CW multifunction device

Brother's MFC-790CW is a solid multifunction device for the home office. Businesses that need to print color documents like manuals and guidebooks will enjoy the relative speed and affordability of the MFC-790CW.

The compact MFC-790CW is black and gray, and equipped with a 4.2-inch LCD touch screen. From the screen, you can control most of the unit’s functions, including copying, faxing, scanning, managing photos, and troubleshooting. The MFC-790CW comes...

Brother MFC-790CW review

Equipped with a flatbed scanner, an automatic document feeder for copying and scanning, a (smallish) 50-sheet printer tray, a built-in answering machine, and a telephone headset, the Brother MFC-790CW is ideal for the home-office setting.

Brother MFC-790CW

If your requirements are for basic printing, scanning and copying then you are extremely well catered for in the all-in-one market. A basic machine with a flatbed scanner will cost you less than £125 and give you all you need to print documents, scan...

Brother’s relatively compact black-and-grey MFC-790CW combines decent speed and print quality along with network capabilities to make it ideal for the home-office environment. In addition to colour printing, colour copying, colour scanning and colour...

Brother MFC-790CW review

Boasting high-quality text and colour prints; with ink cartridges you can afford; the MFC-790CW from Brother is a multifunction inkjet worth considering.

High-quality text and colour prints, affordable ink

Slow monochrome printing, low-capacity paper tray

Brother’s MFC-790CW black text printing tests were slower overall compared to competing printers, which may give businesses that require quick printing pause before purchasing it. But businesses that need to print colour documents will enjoy the...

Consumer review (newegg.com)

works great but scan isn't reliable

Works like a champ, paper jams are super easy to fix and rarely happen(only when I printed business cards on the backside, but I got them all printed double-sided), ink is easy to change, and it's so easy to use. I've had this printer for several years...

Wireless function and media card printout is great, print quality is decent, scanning function is unreliable so it has been rarely used. Same with the fax function and the digital fax, which also are not reliable, which has something to do with the...

Great Printer until you change ink

Support site has latest firmware and drivers for Windows 7. No issues with install or setup.

Great printer, good software and excellent support from Brother. The product seems to have issues with the ink nozzles (see cons)

I really like this printer UNTIL you have to change ink. Printer will no long print cleanly even with new Brother cartridges. Ran diagnostics and called Brother support. Since the print nozzles are in the printer and not on the cartridge, they replace...

Consumer review (newegg.com)

No printing

I needed a printer and could not wait for another to be delivered so I had to get one local, did pay more than Newegg but what can you do. Its not Newegg's fault they did not build it.

Worked great for 1 hour

After 1 hour it froze, even the power button would not shut it down, unpluged it and started over and after another hour it did it again. Had to RMA
