Brother's $180 MFC-790CW color inkjet multifunction printer has a tempting array of goodies, but offers lackluster performance. Despite its aspirations, the MFC-790CW can't compete with other machines in its price range, such as the HP OfficeJet J4680.

Inexpensive; touchscreen control panel Wi-Fi connectivity; dedicated photo tray

Agonizingly slow text printing

Given its low price and interesting features, the Brother MFC-790CW could have been a contender. But its plodding performance can't be ignored

Review: Brother MFC-790CW multifunction device

Brother's MFC-790CW is a solid multifunction device for the home office. Businesses that need to print color documents like manuals and guidebooks will enjoy the relative speed and affordability of the MFC-790CW.

The compact MFC-790CW is black and gray, and equipped with a 4.2-inch LCD touch screen. From the screen, you can control most of the unit’s functions, including copying, faxing, scanning, managing photos, and troubleshooting. The MFC-790CW comes...

For an affordable printer with features, this is great!

Great Design ; ADF=God of printing ; Fax, Copying, Printing & Scanning ; The Scanning feature can scan multiple images to your computer without any mechanical work (it does it over wireless) ; Wi-Fi ; Bluetooth ; Ink cartridge levels are acceptable

That annoying beeping noise it does every 4 days or so really pisses me off ; Printing and scanning is somewhat slow (although significantly faster than my previous printer) ; Has trouble receiving fax papers ; Occasional 'freezing

Brother printers are bad.

The Brother lines of printers and All-in-Ones are terrible. Products do not function mechanically. Service is terrible. Kind of "Brother" you never want to have.

Starts out great w/good quality, speed and pricing

After a few weeks, nothing but trouble. Print quality drops. Multiple ink cartridges dry out quickly. Touch screen never works. Printer spends more time beeping about a problem, than it does printing

Great Printer until you change ink

Support site has latest firmware and drivers for Windows 7. No issues with install or setup.

Great printer, good software and excellent support from Brother. The product seems to have issues with the ink nozzles (see cons)

I really like this printer UNTIL you have to change ink. Printer will no long print cleanly even with new Brother cartridges. Ran diagnostics and called Brother support. Since the print nozzles are in the printer and not on the cartridge, they replace...

No printing

I needed a printer and could not wait for another to be delivered so I had to get one local, did pay more than Newegg but what can you do. Its not Newegg's fault they did not build it.

Worked great for 1 hour

After 1 hour it froze, even the power button would not shut it down, unpluged it and started over and after another hour it did it again. Had to RMA

Great Value AIO

I shopped the competition from Epson, HP, Canon, Lexmark, and Kodak and found the Brother best met my needs at a price I was willing to pay.

The MFC-790CW is a very fully-featured AIO and a great value for list price; if you get it on sale, it's even better! I've had great luck with Brother products; they are reliable and consumables (ink/toner) are reasonably priced. Lack of "chipped" ink...

Unlike MFC-795CW, this unit did not come with Win7 drivers, but these were an easy download from the Brother website. Just note that the CD supplied with the MFC-790CW won't install on a Win7 machine. If the download is too much trouble, the unit works...

Just after 6 month, it won't print black!

I have a old HP inkjet printer never got this problem for 5 years. It is really frustrating, since it's just 100$ printer, if you sent it back for RMA, you wasted $25 for shipping and at least a few hour for packing and mailing and get the same kind...

It works perfectly in the first several months

It won't print black even before the original starter black ink cartridge runs out
