Review: Brother MFC-9840CDW multifunction printer

The Brother MFC-9840CDW is a multifunction color laser printer, copier, scanner, and fax machine with wired and wireless networking capabilities. It doesn't come cheap, but if you're looking for a versatile machine that does its job well, the...

Setting up the MFC-9840CDW was a breeze. After powering up the machine and installing the toner cartridges, you have three connection options: Ethernet, USB 2.0, or 802.11b/g wireless. Connecting via USB is as simple as it sounds. And when we plugged...

Good at first then wen downhill

Too many user have the same issues I do so I'd have to say -- avoid this machine. When comes up for a new set of cartridges (which will cost AUD $800) I'll junk the machine and replace with a similarly-specced MFP. Will cost the same or not much more...

Cheap to buy. Lots of great features like wireless, duplex scanning and printing. Good print and scan speed once warmed up

Poor color print quality. It was good for a year then deteriorated. Now it's streaky, uneven and lacks density. I can't use it for presentation-quality work. When a toner cartridge runs low it leaks toner through the machine causing blotches on output

worst machine that makes printing extremely costly

poor quality prints and cost per print is too high since it misreads the toners as being empty. I had a technician out twice. in stead of it being under warranty (less than 1 yr old), their tech makes it a 'software issue' (even though my IT dept says...

i really can't mention any positive quality other then that Brother makes it so much easier to appreaciate other printer brands by having the worst machine and the worst customer service

No customer service behind their 1 800 number ; poor quality prints (my 7 yr old Dell makes better prints) ; cost per print is too high due to misreading the ink and then shutting down. my IT dept says it isn't)

This is a dog

What a waste of time and money. I would give this thing away except that I wouldn't want somebody cursing me for poor quality and high expense (cartidges are in the $70-100 range. AWFUL.

Prints great for about 1000 copies

The ink cartridges start to leak all over the place. You'll spend a lot of time cleaning up the insides so that your copies don't have spots and splotches

Great Printer - Love my investment in 2008

Brother continues with excellent products. I have used the new 9970CDW and can't wait to get one of those.

I bought this for 3 reasons, Great Color Laser, Great Scanner, Networkable. It has worked beyond my expectations and has seen medium duty in my home office. My High School kids use it all the time as well as both myself and my wife for work

With this much functionality, size and weight can't be avoided. But it is a big unit

Loved it..for a while

Bought it in 3/09. About two months ago, the paper tray stopped feeding paper. The LCD would say "Jam" but it wasn't jammed. It just wasn't picking up the paper. I have replaced the drum unit, the belt unit, the paper tray, and reloaded all colors at...

Does everything I need...links well with several computers...has been quite a workhorse for me

Great product while it lasts. Even good care doesn't seem to be rewarded though

constantly blocks due to error messages on empty toners

This is my second and last brother. Not only is the machine a piece of junk, the company refuses to acknowledge any fault and give its customers after sales service. Spend a little more and by a real business printer

if it doesn't block due to error messages, it actually prints

constantly requirs maintenance, looses ink (leading to dirty toner cartridges), uses more ink than advertised competition (leading to high operating cost), extremely poor customer service address a range of problems that are widely advertised online

I am returning this unit and at least for now going back to my old slower but perfectly functioning system. I would not recommend this unit for 2 reasons, the absolutely lousy color and the inconsistent way it handles fax/voice. If you can dedicate a...

Fairly fast does many things

Adjusting colors will not fix orange vs red, pastel blue vs royal blue. Color is terrible by any standard. If you just need different colors, it works, if you want true colors it is not close. Could not get it to work properly with shared fax

Loud, not networkable and pricy toner

I'd spend the extra money for another brand , just for quiteter operations.

Good print quality

This machine is LOUD. One reason we bought it was to scan to files from the MFC9840 to various networked PCs. I spent hrs with tech support and never got this to work. Beware-all 3 color cartridges need to be replaced at the same time at >$200

Product Specifications

The 9000 Series deliver fast high quality prints at 20ppm, whether you're printing color charts, vivid color presentations and images or black text documents. Create professional color and mono copies at the touch of a button, with fast copy speeds and advanced copy features. Reduce your paper usage and costs by copying 2 or 4 pages onto one A4 sheet - simply select this option from the LCD menu. The 9000 Series give all your workgroup access to easy color copying. With a scan resolution of 19,200 x 19,200 dpi, you'll enjoy quality scans every time. Scan-to-email, OCR, image, FTP or file with the very latest, easy to use, scanning software. iFAX (scan to e-mail server) allows documents to be faxed anywhere in the world over the internet, without use of a telephone line, therefore reducing call charges. LDAP allows the machine to integrate with a directory server to look up contacts and e-mail addresses. Documents can then be scanned as PDF, TIFF or JPEG formats and sent anywhere in the world using scan to e-mail or iFAX. You can even use the scanner function at the same time as operating in another mode, for example whilst printing a document. Send and receive color or mono fax messages the easy way with one touch and speed dial locations to make communicating with your most popular numbers quick and simple. You can use the automatic document feeder to send multiple pages, or the flatbed to fax from bound documents, giving you maximum flexibility. Built-in wired or wireless network connectivity for sharing the machines capabilities with your network of users. To keep your data safe and private there's SSL-Secure Socket Layer for secure printing (encrypted data). SSL is a protocol often used for secure Internet shopping and banking. By printing through IPP (Internet Printing Protocol) the data is encrypted at the PC and sent through the network to the printer, then decoded and printed. The MFC-9840CDW offers a unique function in the color laser market. The print from, and scan to, USB function will not only benefit you in your normal working day, but is also an ideal offering to your clients or business partners who can print documents directly from their own USB memory stick whilst visiting your offices. And if you need to print images, these can be printed directly from your digital camera using the PictBridge interface saving you time on downloads, editing and printing. The MFC-9840CDW offers duplex as standard. Printing or copying on both sides of the paper could reduce your paper usage, and costs, by up to 50%. But the benefit isn't only financial. Duplex also lets you create professional looking documents and enhances your environmental credentials.
