Canon Pixma IP4600

The $100 (as of 3/3/09) Canon Pixma iP4600 color inkjet printer is inexpensive to buy and maintain. Although it's minimally equipped and slow when printing text, it's still worth considering for the budget-minded home user and amateur photographer.

Low price; economical inks ; Comparatively fast at printing photos

Slow while printing text ; No media slots

While the photo quality and speed are pleasing, the lack of media slots and the merely decent text speed are not.

Single-function, basic inkjet printers suitable for the home or home office haven't quite gone the way of the dinosaur, or even the not-quite-extinct dot matrix printer, but they're growing rare. More and more, standard inkjet printers are being...

High-quality photos. Prints directly from cameras. Two paper trays. Automatic duplexing

Slower than the last-generation printer it replaces. Full-page graphics tend to make plain paper curl

The Canon Pixma iP4600 is a surprising step down in speed from the printer it replaces, but it offers similar output quality and paper handling at a lower price.

I sitll have my color laser printer and primarily use this printer for photos and as a backup for when the laser goes down for whatever reason. The Canon has never failed me in the six months I have used it. The photo quality output is impressive and...

Great output quality, especially when printing photos. Printing software is simple to install. Uses separate tanks for each color so you only replace and buy what you need. ink pricing is among the lowest for inkjets as is cost per page output

poorly written setup instructions in regards to the unique paper tray design. no customers service. email is only option but on my one try found it to be an effort in futility as csr staff don't know didly about pc's or printers

Nice printer if you don't mind buying ink all the time.

I installed a brand new set of ink cartridges to verify to myself about the ink consumption. I also checked grayscale in the settings. After about 15 text pages and 10 envelope with absolutely no color printing of anything, two of the color inks were...

Handles envelopes very nicely and generally print is fast and of great quality

The IP4600 is beyond ridiculous with ink consumption. Yes I know all ink jets are generally a scam when it comes to ink but this one rises to comedy

Does not print on DVD's contrary to CNET's specs!

I guess the lesson learned is is to trust no one "specs" but the manufacturer or the vendor.

I have just received this printer and have only set it up - which went well.... Until I found out that it does not print on CD's or DVD's per CNET's features/specs suggests

Contacted Canon USA and they advised that "each market selects the features they want for each model and this model no longer comes with the CD/DVD print feature" - which is why I bought this printer to begin with

Excellent product for the price. Ease of use and quality results for printing photos, cards, flyers. If ink is not wasted, the ink will last a while so far have printed over 100 sheets and have not seen an issue with ink.

Easy to operate. Quality performance

none so far

Okay for user who prints infrequently. Not good if you want to print a lot of pictures or text.

Beautiful photo prints. Can print duplex pages

Goes through ink tanks too quickly. I spent $200 in three months on ink, before getting rid of it. My I860 cost me far less to run

A very solid value

I can't say that I am in love with the ip4600 as I was with my olld ip5000 (no longer available or I would have bought another one without question). All I can say is that I hope that the ip4600 is as much a workhorse as the old ip5000, which got...

A surprisingly reasonable price. Setup was a breeze with WIndows XP; software does not conflict with other programs. Able to print on a variety of sizes, weights, and qualities (from photo paper to card stock) of paper. Separate ink tanks

The photo quality is good but flesh tones are disappointingly yellowish. Output seems slow, and the machine is noisy. Best guestimate is that the ink cost has risen as I don't think that I'm getting as much out of the ink tanks as with ip5000
