The HP Deskjet 6540 Color Inkjet Printer ($149.99 direct) delivers what every ink jet ideally should, but few do. On the one hand, it's a speed demon. On the other, its output quality ranges from just short of very good to just short of excellent....

Exceptional speed for an ink jet. Overall output quality is better than for most ink jets

For best results on different kinds of output, you need to change cartridges continually, choosing black, photo color, or photo gray as appropriate

The HP Deskjet 6540 is faster than most ink jets, and prints better-looking graphics and photos too.

Fast printing in both black and colour

Its colour printing is more expensive than competitors

If blistering print speed is crucial--particularly if you're looking to make regular use of the lower quality settings--you'll find this a stunning printer.

Solid Printer

Ink cartridges are smaller than the older HP cartridges. Not sure if this changes the ink lifetime or not...
