HP Envy 5540 All-in-One Review

The HP Envy 5540 All-in-One prints documents with above-average quality, but it comes with a below-average set of features. The tri-color ink cartridge design forces you to frequently purchase expensive ink refills, while the lack of basic connectivity...

This printer produced some of the best-quality documents in our testing.

An inconvenient three-in-one ink cartridge means you need to replace all of your color inks when only one runs out.

The HP Envy 5540 All-in-One prints documents with category-leading quality, but missing connectivity features and expensive inks keep it from ranking higher.

HP Envy 5540 All-in-One Printer Review and Ratings

This inexpensive, light-duty color inkjet churns out excellent-looking prints, scans, and copies—and, if you commit to Instant Ink, does so at a reasonable cost per page.

Low initial price ; High-quality output ; Easy to set up and use ; Reasonable cost per page (if you subscribe to Instant Ink) ; Wide cloud and mobile-device support ; Duplex printing

Very high cost per page if you don’t opt for Instant Ink ; Comparatively slow ; Uses two-cartridge ink system ; Small input and output trays, with flimsy paper tray ; No ADF, SD-card slot, or USB flash-drive port ; Mono-only LCD

HP Envy 5540 All-in-One Printer review

A cheap and cheerful colour inkjet for low volume printing

Lots of features including smartphone support ; Easy to install, configure and use ; Quiet operation

A little on the slow side ; Quite expensive for mono printing

The Envy 5540 is a good budget buy if colour is your priority, but it isn't designed for demanding workplaces.

Another adequate, but unenviable, inkjet MFP – the Envy 5540 is a workhorse, nothing more

HP Envy 5540 review

A versatile, low-cost printer for the home office – although HP's ink prices may have you scratching your head.

The Envy 5540 is good value for people who need to produce a lot of colour documents or photo prints, and provides good quality for such a low-cost printer. However, simple mono text documents remain relatively expensive and there are cheaper options...

HP Envy 5540 review

A striking bit of design at an eye-catching price; the trade-off is mediocre quality and performance

Excellent print quality; Stylish design;

Tri-colour cartridge design leads to wasted ink; Slow print speeds;

On paper, the HP Envy 5540 looks like a stylish and capable printer for a fantastic price. But print quality and speed don’t match the confidence of the design, and the value proposition gets worse and worse the more you print.

HP Envy 5540 All-In-One Printer Review

The HP ENVY 5540 is an All-In-One printer that boasts built-in Wi-Fi, double-siding printing, a 2.2-inch touch screen which makes navigating the printer extremely easy, and also the ability to save money on ink using HP Instant Ink. It retails for less...

Built-in Wi-Fi ; Respectable black / white print speeds ; Low price for a printer of this standard ; Separate paper trays for regular and photo printing ; Instant Ink ready

Rather large ; No USB cable included

All in all, the HP Envy 5540 is the perfect option for students or home office users on a budget. The double-sided print option, which isn’t normally a feature on printers of this price range, works extremely well. With the ability to also produce...

good but noisey

This printer is noisey but I still like it. I ordered it directly from the Company after finding out (from the Company) that the local store model they carried was a "retail" version. I got a good deal from the Company as it was on sale. When my...

Disappointing.

I printed out some business cards with a bit of color. I use a laser for my primary printing, I went back about a month later to print a single color page and the color ink cartridge had apparently dried out or was empty. It showed the cartridge was...
