There aren't a lot of color lasers that can claim the title of personal printersmall enough to share a desk with and cheap enough to justify buying for just one person's usebut the Dell 1230c Color Laser Printer ($229 direct) qualifies. Its text ...
Small. Reasonably high-quality output. Vibrant color for graphics. Near-photo-quality photos
Slow and with low text quality for a laser (although better than most inkjets on both counts). High cost per page
The Dell 1230c Color Laser Printer offers reasonably high-quality output overall, but text quality and speed are low for a laser, and the cost per page is high.

The Motorola Debut i856 is a nifty iDEN push-to-talk phone for Boost Mobile subscribers. As Sprint's wholly owned prepaid brand, Boost sells plenty of iDEN phones already. But the i856 is the first slider with PTT capability. Despite a few stumbles, ...
Solid voice quality. Loud speakerphone. Good battery life. Feels durable
Stiff, cramped membrane keypad. Low-res LCD. Unreliable Bluetooth pairing
The Motorola Debut i856 sits nicely in Boost Mobile's push-to-talk lineup, offering subscribers a stylish slider with GPS and good quality, but other iDEN options are better.

Xerox color lasers, more often than not, are strong contenders for Editors' Choice awards, so I generally look forward to reviewing them. By those standards, alas, the Xerox Phaser 6140/N is a disappointment. It's not that it's a terrible printer by ...
Good paper handling. Price as tested includes optional duplexer. Acceptably high-quality output
Slow for a laser. High cost per page
The Xerox Phaser 6140/N offers good paper handling and a high level of output quality, but it's pricey for what it delivers. The running costs are also surprisingly high.

The Canon Color ImageClass MF8350Cdn multi-function printer (MFP), or all-in-one (AIO) if you prefer, delivers high-quality output at exceptionally fast speedespecially considering its price ($699 direct, which includes a 1-year on-site warranty). It ...
Fast. Good paper handling. Prints, scans, and faxes over network. Standalone copier and fax
Fax from PC feature requires custom installation. Scanning using a program's scan command requires two trips to the printer
The Canon Color ImageClass MF8350Cdn all-in-one (aka MFP) delivers impressive speed and output quality for a small office or workgroup.

In most cases, if you hear a voice coming from your printer, you should be worried that you're having a psychotic episode. But with the Canon Selphy ES40 dedicated photo printer ($149.99 direct), the talking is normal.
Print pack holds both dye roll and paper for easy setup and better portability. Photos are water and scratch resistant
Relatively big and heavy for a small-format printer. Diagonal lines (like spokes in a wheel) can print with jagged edges
The Canon Selphy ES40 is one of the best small-format printers available, despite problems printing diagonal lines (as with spokes in a wheel) when printing from a computer.

One of the benefits of being a reviewer is that occasionally you get play with something that's just plain fun. The Polaroid PoGo Instant Digital Camera ($200 street, complete with a standard 1-year warranty) is that kind of toy...uh...product. It ...
Easy setup. JPG image quality equivalent to the best camera phones. Print quality suitable for wallet-size photos. It's fun
Prints photos at only 2 by 3 inches. Relatively low image quality by today's standards for both JPG file and printed output
Despite some limitations, the Polaroid PoGo Instant Digital Camera delivers more than good enough image quality for its intended purpose, and it's fun to use too.

Last year, when Epson introduced its Stylus NX models, I reviewed the NX400 and came away impressed. By bucking the trend of designing all-in-ones (AIOs) for the dual role of home and home office, and focusing just on home use, Epson had come up with ...
Extraordinarily fast. High-quality output, particularly for text and photos. Ink is smear-resistant, even on plain paper
Only limited potential for the dual role of home and home office, with features that concentrate on home use
The Epson Stylus NX515 focuses on tasks central to a home, rather than home-office, all-in one, but also delivers surprisingly high-quality text at fast speed.

If you need an all-in-one (AIO) at home for copying, scanning, and printing, the HP Photosmart C4680 All-in-One ($99.99 direct) is a reasonable candidate, but only if you don't print many pages. Its text, graphics, and photo quality are all par or ...
Relatively fast. Reasonably high-quality output across the board. Prints, scans, and copies
LCD for previewing photos on memory cards is unusually small. Relatively high cost per page
The HP Photosmart C4680 All-in-One delivers on features, but the high cost per page can easily make it more expensive overall than a printer that costs more.

As the all-in-one (AIO) variation of the Editors' Choice HP Officejet 6000 Wireless Printer, the HP Officejet 6500 Wireless All-In-One Printer ($199.99 direct) had some high expectations to live up to when it showed up for testing. And, indeed, it did ...
Notably high-quality graphics. Prints, scans, faxes over network. Standalone copier and fax. Ethernet and WiFi
Doesn't always work as expected (for example, sending scans to Outlook, even when set to use Windows Mail)
The HP Officejet 6500 Wireless All-In-One Printer offers lots of features for a small or home office, but stubs its toe on some software issues.
