Canon Selphy ES40

In most cases, if you hear a voice coming from your printer, you should be worried that you're having a psychotic episode. But with the Canon Selphy ES40 dedicated photo printer ($149.99 direct), the talking is normal.

Print pack holds both dye roll and paper for easy setup and better portability. Photos are water and scratch resistant

Relatively big and heavy for a small-format printer. Diagonal lines (like spokes in a wheel) can print with jagged edges

The Canon Selphy ES40 is one of the best small-format printers available, despite problems printing diagonal lines (as with spokes in a wheel) when printing from a computer.

This sturdy photo printer has superior image quality, easy setup, and built-in special effects and auto-correction, but be prepared to pay a high cost per print.

Simple setup and operation; long-life, wear-resistant photos; optional gold and silver ink for extra photo glitz

Expensive prints; large and heavy compared with similar photo printers

Indeed, the running costs for this machine are fairly high. On the upside, Canon does offer a one-year warranty for parts and labor, in a world dominated by 90-day warranties. If your printer breaks during this time and Canon’s tech service can’t solve...
