Epson WorkForce Pro WP-4540 Review: Fast, High-Capacity Business Inkjet

The Epson WorkForce Pro WP-4540 ($400 as of February 22, 2012) does most everything (copying/faxing/printing/scanning) well, but it faces stiff competition in the business inkjet multifunction category. Put another way: It's fast, but not the fastest;...

Fast performance ; Cheap ink ; High paper capacity

Hard to set up push-scanning via wireless

Speed, high paper capacity, and inexpensive inks make this full-featured MFP a nice fit for a busy small office or workgroup.

Epson WorkForce Pro WP-4540 All-in-One Printer

Despite the $100 difference in price, the two printers are closely matched, with most of the price difference disappearing if you add the second paper tray to the HP model. The second tray also erases most of the difference in paper capacity between...

Laser-class speed. Excellent paper handling, with three paper trays and duplexer. WiFi. Low claimed cost per page

Big and heavy for an inkjet multi-function printer

Focused primarily on business needs, the Epson WorkForce Pro WP-4540 delivers laser-class speed, a low claimed cost per page, and surprisingly good paper handling.

Review: Epson WorkForce Pro WP-4540 All-in-One Printer

We've covered quite a bit of the Epson line and usually found the printers to be solid, respectable, and inexpensive. This latest addition to the WorkForce family, the WP-4540 is arguably all of those with a few caveats.

Epson WorkForce Pro WP-4540

Every now and then, an all-in-one (AIO) inkjet printer arrives at our labs that makes us scratch our head shortly after unboxing it. No, it's not a hygiene thing; it's because the printer blurs the line between a color laser and an inkjet.

Very low relative ink cost ; High-volume paper capacity ; Top-notch output quality ; Three input trays come standard ; Auto-duplexing ADF

No borderless printing ; No printing from memory cards, flash drives, or other USB devices

This high-volume workhorse provides top-quality output, flexible paper handling, and a low cost of operation. For most, its perks will outweigh its lack of borderless printing or support for SD cards/USB keys.

Epson WorkForce Pro WP-4540 Review: Fast Inkjet with High Paper Capacity

The Epson WorkForce Pro WP-4540 was introduced as an inkjet with the "world's fastest auto two-sided print speeds." Epson also states that it can save users up to 50 percent in print costs when compared to other printers.

Fast print speeds ; Holds 580 sheets of paper in total ; Nice 5.8-inch color touchscreen ; Lots of features (scan features, custom print sizes, etc)

Noisy printing ; Scans appear overly saturated ; Average quality 8.5 x 11 photo printing

Epson WorkForce ProWP4540

Epson has an excellent reputation for producing high-quality printers so we were looking forward to reviewing the WorkForce ProWP4540. With three paper trays, USB, Ethernet and Wi-Fi connectivity as well a scanner with sheet-feeder, this looked like a...

AirPrint; paper handling

Some banding on images

The Epson WorkForce ProWP4540 is an excellent printer for the busy household or small office. Print quality was very good. With multiple paper trays and AirPrint support there’s a lot to recommend it.

Had to send back--never worked right

Would not recommend. Bad print head, wouldn't recognize new cartridges. Wasted tons of paper trying to perform maintenance.

Prints fast. Epson replaced it. New one is OK

Love Epson All-in-ones

The Epson printers I've owned the last few years have all worked well, lasted well and been a great money saver on ink. FINALLY a product that is reasonably priced with reasonably priced ink refill. This is not a photo printer, but it does fairly well...

Huge Ink cost saver. The ink lasts forever. Once the Low ink alert comes up, it seems like it printed 100 pages ; Holds a lot of paper. 3 trays essentially. I owned a color laser jet, knowing lasers save ink/toner costs and it was NOT true. This Epson...

I can't seem to do dual sided half-page booklets (without the backside printing upside down). I remember doing it once before so I don't know why, but it's not working with MS Word 2007 and Windows 7
