AMD Phenom II X3 720 Black Edition Socket AM3 Triple Core Processor

By Frank Stroupe (thinkcomputers.org)

Today I will be looking at my first triple core processor, the AMD Phenom II X3 720 Black Edition. It has been around about six months now, and the price has dropped a fair amount, making this CPU a definite consideration for an economy rig. With ...

AM3 gives capability of using DDR3 memory ; Performance not far behind the much more expensive X4 940 ; Easily attained a 25% overclock ; Only $119

None really

Of course the GTX 260 coupled with the i7 blew away the Phenom II X3 720 in every gaming test. The X3 720 showed a distinct bottleneck holding back the GTX 260 from its full FPS potential. But again, keep in mind that the i7 system easily costs twice ...

AMD 955

By nom (newegg.com)

Overclocks easily and gets to 3.7 with out much effort. ASUS M4A79XTD EVO AM3 790X ATX AMD Motherboard AMD Phenom II X4 955 SAPPHIRE 100283L Radeon HD 5770 2x G.SKILL 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 Coolmaster haf 922

Blazing fast quad core for under $180. Runs cool at 27C idle. The stock heat sink is much better than I though it would be no need to buy that zalman I had planed on getting. Runs all games that I have tried perfectly ;

Not a con but the 95w version is on the horizon ;

Very sturdy cpu

By N/A (newegg.com)

200 dollar price point makes this even more of a hot pick, I bought mine for 250

I had a lot of fun tinkering with this cpu as it is my first build, stock 3.4 Quad core, I have this OC'ed to 3.7 without messing with voltages or anything, just the multi ;
