Samsung SP-A900B

Samsung SP-A900B

Award: Editor's Choice!

Extremely accurate color including spot-on color decoding for both SD and HD ; nearly perfect primary/secondary colors and linear grayscale tracking ; superb black level and shadow detail performance ; bright for its class enabling it to adequately ...

While improved, black level still not as deep as the best LCoS and LCD projectors ; at its price, I expect horizontal lens shift as well as electronic zoom and focus

The new chip in Samsung's SP-A900B helps it to outperform every projector in its class, including its step-down Joe Kane-designed brother, and to compete favorably against significantly more-expensive three-chip DLP projectors.

Sanyo PLV-Z3000

Accurate color decoding ; solid connectivity ; well-rounded feature package with horizontal and vertical lens shift

Inaccurate primary colors bring down the overall color fidelity ; not very bright

Sanyo's affordable 1080p front projector has its share of flaws, but still represents a good value in its category.

Sony BRAVIA VPL-HW10

Reproduces deep, clean blacks with solid shadow detail ; reasonably accurate color ; excellent feature package including horizontal and vertical lens shift ; sleek styling

Red and green are somewhat inaccurate ; zoom, focus and lens shift are manual, not electronic ; not bright enough to drive very large screens

Sony's VPL-VW10, the company's least expensive SXRD projector yet, proves itself a very good performer for the price, and therefore an excellent value.

BenQ MP512

Extremely affordable ; relatively deep black levels for an entry-level projector

Color accuracy leaves a bit to be desired ; short on features ; resolution too low for serious home theater use ; not ideal for screen sizes larger than 92 inches wide

Priced less than a midsize flat-screen LCD TV, BenQ's MP512 ST DLP projector is a solid, affordable option for people who want a big screen for casual use or gaming.

Extremely accurate color including spot-on color decoding for both SD and HD, nearly perfect primary colors, and linear grayscale tracking ; superb black level and shadow detail performance ; plenty of light output ; excellent lens ; solid feature ...

No horizontal lens shift

The Samsung SP-A800B outperforms every projector in its class hands-down, and competes favorably with the three-chip DLP units that cost three times as much.

Mitsubishi Electric HC6000

The Mitsubishi HC6000 is a solid value with capable video processing ; linear grayscale tracking ; accurate color decoding ; full feature package for ease of setup ; and plenty of connectivity

Inaccurate primary and secondary colors ; black-level performance could be improved a bit more

One of the better performers in the entry-level 1080p projector race, the Mitsubishi HC6000 also benefits from a comprehensive feature set.

JVC DLA HD100

The JVC DLA-HD100 has excellent black-level performance and consequently superb contrast ratio, a solid feature package allows plenty of flexibility in installation, and good connectivity with two HDMI inputs.

Poor primary and secondary color accuracy, which leads to severe oversaturation of color.

Although a top performer in some respects, the JVC DLA-HD100 projector's relatively high price makes it a questionable value considering its color accuracy issues.

Sony VPL-VW60

The Sony VPL-VW60 has accurate color decoding, and reproduces a deep shade of black ; comprehensive feature package

Inaccurate primary colors

While its color fidelity is not nearly as good as other late-model Sony SXRD products, the otherwise good-performing VPL-VW60 home theater projector remains a solid value.

Panasonic PT-AE2000

Excellent value ; produces a deep level of black ; solid feature package with lots of setup options like horizontal and vertical lens shift ; superb connectivity including three HDMI inputs and a PC input

Inaccurate primary colors of red and especially green ; not bright enough to drive very large screens

The Panasonic PT-AE2000U 1080p projector is a credible performer, especially when you consider its relatively low price.

Sony VPL-VW200

Sony VPL-VW200

Award: Editor's Choice!

This projector has exceptional color fidelity. It produces a deep shade of black with excellent shadow detail. It also has a superb feature package, including panel alignment and blacking, and it has solid connectivity

Expensive ; some loss of resolution because of the scaler ; MotionFlow dejudder processing creates artifacts and makes film look more like video ; no horizontal lens shift

Although it certainly costs more than most of the 1080p competition, the SXRD-based Sony VPL-VW200 delivers one of the best pictures of any projector we've tested.
