Epson MovieMate 85HD Review

Buying a projector to show movies on the side of your house on warm summer evenings is akin to owning a boat. It's an absolute blast the first few times, but it soon devolves into a chore: Drag out the projector. Drag out the speakers. Drag out the...

The 85HD’s video resolution is quite good for what it is. The black levels could be better, but our main kvetch has to do with resolution. The projector is equipped with a good upscaler for converting DVD video to 720p, but we really wish Epson had...

Epson MovieMate 85HD Projector First Look

After a while in this industry, you can't help but develop biases. It's just a fact of life. Some of us love and swear by open headphones while others wouldn't accept anything other than a closed back pair. Some use and love ear-buds (high end ones of...

With an obvious focus on gaming and parties, the big draw of the Epson MovieMate 85D is the price. At a penny under $900, it is practically an impulse buy - especially this time of year. While you can get cheaper versions of this type of product, they...

Setting up the 85HD is easy. Plug in the removable power cord to the projector and the power outlet and turn on the 85HD. You can use the remote control or on-board controls and menus to adjust the color, brightness, volume, and input source. Move the...

Epson MovieMate 85HD

The MovieMate 85HD, first of all, is true HD - the 85HD is officially 720p or standard HDTV resolution (1080p is the highest HDTV), and that's still 2.25 times the resolution of a standard DVD player (like the one that's built in). Of course it has a...

Very bright picture, measured even higher than Epson's 2500 lumen claim ; Good color ; Built in DVD/CD/MP3/etc. player ; Wide range of inputs, including HDMI and computer ; Most useful: Movies, Sports, Games, PCs, iPads, iPhones Androids ; 10 watt...

Could have blacker blacks ; Should have an SD card slot ; Has standard DVD player instead of a Blu-ray player ; Remote control not backlit ; Limited image controls ; Audio system (which does have good volume) could stand to be even better

Seems to me, that the MovieMate 85HD is a competent home entertainment system. It's well equipped, it works with all kinds of sources in addition to its internal DVD players. The 85HD seems reasonably priced, when considered against stand-alone...

Very Impressed!

I have not had this projector long, so I cannot comment on bulb life. Yet, taking it out of the box, setting it up in my bedroom and popping a DVD in it - WOW!

Works well. too bad they took out the the ability to raise and lower the picture with the lens. My son has the same model and his has that feature. On a ceiling mount I have to prop the rear of the projector up about 2 inches.
