Mitsubishi PK 20

The Mitsubishi PK20 PocketProjector weighs only 1.1 pounds, but it packs solid performance into its small frame.

Mitsubishi's second-generation LED-based projector, the PK20 PocketProjector, is small, portable, and generally well-designed, but it's also more expensive than the competition.

Battery is optional. Volume is too low to be useful. Pricey.

Sanyo PLC-XL50

projector, with most of the differences counting very much in its favor. It doesn't look like most projectors, and its shape defies easy description. Unlike most projectors, its measured brightness is higher than the rated brightness (2,000 lumens) ...

Incredibly short throw, with 75-inch diagonal image at 3 inches from screen. Bright image. Vibrant colors.

Big and heavy. Setup takes more work than with most projectors. Maximum 80-inch diagonal image.

The Sanyo PLC-XL50 delivers a high-quality image from such a short distance that you can stand less than a foot in front of the screen without casting shadows.

Toshiba FF1

Five Fab Finds for Dad

By M. David Stone

Award: Editor's Choice!

When the Toshiba TDP-FF1AU Mobile Projector ($699 direct) arrived at my door, I took one look at the box and thought that someone must have made a mistake and sent me a large-screen notebook instead of a tiny projector. Opening the box to reveal the ...

Highly portable, at 1.7 pounds including battery. SVGA (800-by-600) resolution. Comes with 22.5-inch folding screen.

Included screen makes the carrying case relatively large. Volume for built-in audio is too low to be useful.

The Toshiba TDP-FF1AU Mobile Projector is less expensive than other projectors that use LEDs, offers more features, and comes with its own 22.5-inch screen.

ViewSonic PJ258D

Home Theater on the Cheap

By M. David Stone

The ViewSonic PJ258D ViewDock ($1,000 street) is a perfectly good choice for a projector to connect to a computer to show presentations, or to a DVD player to watch movies. But that's not what's new and exciting about it. Nor is it that it's built ...

iPod dock for projecting video stored on Apple iPod. Also charges iPod. Good contrast ratio.

Poor audio quality. Extremely obvious rainbow effect from DLP chip.

If you like using your iPod for watching video, you'll like it even better with the ViewSonic PJ258D ViewDock projecting the image at a much larger size.

Epson MovieMate 33

Home Theater on the Cheap

By M. David Stone

As any movie buff will tell you, even the biggest TV can't offer the immersive viewing experience of a projected image on a large screen. That means that the best way to watch movies at home is to build a permanent small theater. Not an option? Then ...

Complete instant theater with projector, DVD player, audio system, and screen. Separate subwoofer.

Limited usefulness for anything but showing movies.

The Epson MovieMate 33 lets you set up a temporary movie theater at home, then pack everything away to regain the room as living space.

Boxlight Broadview

Projectors: Boxlight Broadview

By M. David Stone

If you create your presentations on a widescreen, Boxlight's Broadview DLP projector will let you show them in the same widescreen format.

Native widescreen format (WXGA resolution). Highly portable. Accepts digital and analog signals.

Takes more than a minute to cool down enough to unplug it. Disappointing full-motion video. No way to turn off scaling.
