Planar PD7010 review

Unbeatable value for money from American newcomer

Versatile connections ; Impressive picture performance ; Few of DLP's traditional flaws

Limited zoom ; Occasional issues with dark images and blacks

As compelling a high-def projector as you'll find for the money

Planar PD7010

Americans aren't usually renowned for their svelte curves, but this DLP projector from US new boys Planar is doing its best to fit in with its European rivals

Excellent black depth. Good contrast with lush colours. Great value for money

Not especially bright. Remote is on the fiddly side

Planar PD7010 DLP projector

Planar's PD7010 projector is the new kid on the UK block, so will it stand up for itself or get bullied?

It’s a brave company these days which dares to dip its virgin toes in the harsh waters of the seriously tough UK AV market – especially at the budget end. Yet Planar’s debut doesn't so much successfully join the budget projection market as redefine it.

Planar PD7010

It's got all the connections most budget users will need too, including one v1.2 HDMI and one DVI input (with supplied HDMI adaptor), as well as USB, RS-232, remote control and 12V trigger ports reflecting the fact that it's commonly distributed as a...

Attractively designed, great value, mostly good picture quality

Small traces of DLP artefacting, lack of shadow detail, one or two suspect colours

Planar PD7010

Joining Planar's debut PD7060 is this £600-cheaper model. The only difference is the PD7060 has a contrast ratio of 3500:1 compared with 2500:1 here. Planar hails from the US, but there's a distinctly European feel to its curvy, black and silver design

Versatile connections, Impressive picture performance, Few of DLP's traditional flaws

Limited zoom, Occasional issues with dark images and blacks

As compelling a high-def projector as you'll find for the money

Product Specifications

This projector's 2500:1 contrast, 1,000 lumens, and native 720p HD resolution, completes a trifecta not often seen for the price. Embellished further with wide-ranging connectivity, DLP's DarkChip technology, and intuitive menus, this projector was designed as much for your wallet as it was your home theater experience. Cynics take note: performance and price can peacefully coexist.
