Sony VPL-VW85 Review

Something Old, Something New, Something Red, Green and Blue

As has been the case with it predecessors, this latest projector from Sony offers tremendous performance, flexibility and features, all of which improve from its older siblings. The addition of 120Hz makes for a welcome jump in motion detail and pushes...

Sony VPL-VW85 SXRD Projector Review

Sony VPL-VW85

The Sony VPL-VW85 is a larger projector, it sports a motorize zoom lens, and lens shift. It's reasonably good looking, physically more attractive than most, but it's the performance that will have you putting a serious dent in that credit card

Excellent Color with particularly good skin tones (with a hint of too much red) ; Slightly above average brightness in "best" movie mode ; Superb black level performance ; Very good shadow detail performance ; If not using the dynamic iris, manual iris...

A relatively dim "brightest" mode, of 725 lumens means it can't deal with very much ambient light, at all ; Average sharpness (ok, that's more of a "typical" than a Con, but, sharpness is a big thing, for many, a key deciding factor ; Likely average to...

My last thoughts: Well, I'd rather have the VW85 over my RS20, if for no other reason, for the CFI for sports viewing. I'm even more intrigued, by JVC's DLA-RS35. The RS35 is essentially an VW85 with hand picked components and a higher level of quality...

Sony BRAVIA VPL-VW85 SXRD Projector

The June 2009 issue of Home Theater featured a glowing report on Sony's VPL-VW70 video projector. But as they say, time flies when you're having fun. Building on its enviable past record in cutting-edge, high-value video projectors, Sony has just...

Sony's Real Color Processing (RCP) feature provides color and hue (but not brightness) adjustments for each of the primary and secondary colors. In my opinion, RCP, which we've seen in other Sony displays, has always been too ergonomically confusing to...

Sony BRAVIA VPL-VW85 Review

If you're looking for a high-performance home cinema projector under $10,000, the Sony VW85 is a great option.

The Sony BRAVIA VPL-VW85 is a very impressive home theater projector, designed for the cinema enthusiast who wants to put the best possible image in a light-controlled environment. Despite its low 800-lumen rating, it has the brightness to drive a...

Room for improvement

This unit I am certain has the capability to play satellite and cable telvision. It can also play video games. However it would be a better machine if you could mount it in the ceiling without all the wires hanging down. The way this can be achieved if...
