Your friend has a really nice home theater. That friend is really into it - a serious enthusiast. A friend that can't understand why you are watching a 42 inch LCDTV

Brightest of the low cost 1080p projectors - great for family rooms, bonus rooms, where some light is present ; Good color, very satisfactory for most folks (though definitely not a purist's projector) ; Built in speaker - ideal for quick setup or...

Black level performance is very basic more typical of 720p projectors than the bulk of 1080p models. Still, its fine for those using in rooms that always have some light ; Limited placement flexibility, and no lens shift (typical DLP projector) ; Fan...

The short lamp life and lack of live chat and user manuals could be improved

This is a very good home theater projector that is capable of working outside the house as well.

Vivitek H1080FD DLP Projector

The Vivitek H1080FD is a startlingly cheap DLP projector, but can it make it onto your 'must audition' shortlist?

Although there are clear signs of the H1080FD's budget nature in its build quality and some aspects of its performance, it still does plenty well enough to warrant at least an audition if you're in the market for a startlingly cheap 'part-time' projector.

Accomplished, value-busting 1080p video projector. Office projectors adept with still images and Powerpoint...

Detail, colour, small size, low price, presence of a speaker

Lacks contrast, no lens shift levers, rudimentary sound quality

The lack of manual lens shift levers might not be unusual, but it is annoying, though the H1080 isn't particularly difficult to set-up. It's worth the time spent, too, since pictures are swimming in gorgeous colouring and graced with a rare sharpness....
