Haunting Ground (PlayStation 2)

The survival horror experience is largely built on one of two elements: grisly action, or heaping helpings of tension and suspense. Haunting Ground, Capcom's latest thriller, is one of the latter, pitting a frail young woman against a myriad of...

Released a few months ago to a pretty lukewarm reception, Haunting Ground is an artistic tour de force of horror misunderstood by many and ridiculed by people unwilling to appreciate it for what it is.

Haunting Ground

A slight twist on a reliable formula.

But over time, the hiding and sneaking ceases to be worrisome, it's just time consuming to run away for long enough to lose the bad guy, hide, then wait for him to give up. And you never really know how you're doing with Hewie because he can be...

Haunting Ground Review for the PS2

Survival of the fleetest.

Looks good; No load times; Realistic responses to horror

Which means lots of running away; Which, it turns out, isn't much fun; Dog training for dummies; Boring setting; Dopey bad guys

While visually pleasing and moving in its best moments, the game is too slow for action gamers and too irritating for casual adventure fans. The plot is weird enough that some collectors and video game novelty-seekers might find it worth their money,...

This is the heartwarming tale of a girl and her dog held prisoner in a castle alone, unarmed, and running for their lives. Scared yet? You will be.

Creepy atmosphere and mood;immersive gameplay; experience unique interaction with the dog

Lots of backtracking; slow pacing throughout the game

Haunting Ground Preview

A survival horror game developed by Capcom that isn't Resident Evil? Stranger things have happened...

Haunting Ground looks like it may be another hit for Capcom but I'm a little concerned that it won't be as terrifying as it's advertised to be. Coming from the same developers responsible for the pretty tame Clock Tower 3 I have my doubts that this...

Product Specifications

Haunting Ground, a spine-chilling survival horror game, is set in a mysterious castle that has become a prison for two innocent characters - an orphaned young girl and a white shepherd dog. They must utilize each other's strengths if they hope to escape from their horrifying surroundings. Haunting Ground combines a compelling ambiance of terror and solitude with challenging puzzles and a unique gameplay approach. In Haunting Ground, players take on the role of Fiona Belli, an 18-year-old girl who is the sole survivor of a tragic car accident that has claimed both her parents. When she regains consciousness following the accident, she finds herself locked up in an unfamiliar old castle, with no clear way out. As she makes her way through unsettling surroundings, she encounters an array of strange inhabitants and learns that she has become the heiress of the mysterious castle upon her parents' death. Fiona also comes across Debilitas, a deformed and disturbed man who chases her relentlessly. Luckily, she meets a white shepherd dog named Hewie who has also been trapped in the castle. By saving him from the shackles that imprison him, an instant bond is formed. Though Fiona is a physically weak character, she must use her wit and cunning to unravel the castle's puzzles and figure out what is happening and why. Hewie will be a vital resource in surviving this ordeal as he has strengths where Fiona does not. As players develop trust and foster their relationship with Hewie, he will be much more willing to help Fiona progress through the game. He can use his heightened sense of smell to locate items, utilize his smaller size to access hard to reach areas and attack or distract enemies so Fiona can escape their clutches. The success of this partnership will be crucial if they both hope to stay alive.
