It boils down to this: You need to play Metal Gear Solid 2.

Metal Gear Solid 2: Substance

If there was a title that was deserving of Hollywood treatment and has yet to win a chance at the silver screen, Metal Gear's Solid Snake would fit the bill perfectly. It would also be a natural transition.Cinematic is one of the words that should come...

If you haven't watched the introduction to this game, you owe it to yourself to see it. It's slick, and is indebted more to a cinematic piece in theaters rather than a simple video game. Sure, there are times when you'll mow down countless numbers of...

Metal Gear Solid 2: Substance

Solid Snake is back (mullet and all), this time with a few tricks up his sleeve.

Loads of extras; cool VR missions; excellent use of sound and music

A direct PS2 port; not fully optimized for Xbox hardware; framerate issues

Substance over style.

It's Sons of Liberty!; And a lot more; TONS of missions; Great variety

Doesn't look better at all; Not really worth it for those who own

Those who have played MGS 2 should treat this much in the same way as buying a DVD, only to find out a year later that they've released a double-extra-special collector's edition. Konami might be milking this cow for all its worth, but the milk still...

That's an argument that will go on long after I've passed my judgment, though. The fact of the matter is that Metal Gear Solid 2 is more than just a story, more than just a movie. It's a game, and one of the best ever made. If it isn't the best story...

Metal Gear Solid 2: Substance

When Metal Gear Solid 2 came out on the Playstation 2 last year, it was widely accepted as a finely crafted sequel to the popular Playstation title. Now, a year later, Konami has released this game on the Xbox, but with a lot of extras to make the wait...

Highly detailed world; Loads of extras, including missions with Solid Snake; Polished gameplay

Story gets too convoluted; Minor slowdown; Too many Codec sequences

Should you get Substance? If you never got the original, yes. Xbox owners should be glad to have the chance to play this game. If you have the original.... rent it first. The additional missions and Snake's Tales do add a lot more to the game, but the...

Product Specifications

One of the most anticipated titles in PlayStation2 history absolutely lives up to the hype. Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty is the follow-up to one of the most captivating and intelligent adventures on the original PlayStation. Solid Snake, everyone's favorite mullet-sporting supersoldier, is back, along with many other familiar faces and voices. While its predecessor was lauded for telling a complex story, this sequel has even more fascinating twists and turns. Also, like Metal Gear Solid, MGS2 takes console-game storytelling to an entirely new level with stunning in-game movies, great graphics, and game mechanics that let you find your own solutions to challenges. The game's twisting and at times bizarre plot will undoubtedly keep some gamers perplexed. Konami has replaced the moronic enemies from the first MGS with more cerebral and capable foes; this causes an even greater emphasis on stealth than the original. The controls have been refined and Snake's repertoire of moves has grown, significantly deepening the gameplay. This is, technically and stylistically, one of the best-looking PS2 games on the market. The sound is also topnotch, with a fabulous score and outstanding voice acting. What makes this game such a standout, however, is how all of these sight, sound, and story elements combine to immerse the player into an entertainment form somewhere between movie and game. It will be years before Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty is surpassed. This is interactive entertainment at its finest. --Raymond M. Padilla Pros: One of the best and most complex stories in gaming Outstanding graphics with many interactive elements Excellent soundtrack and voice acting Cons: Long periods o
