Silent Hill: Shattered Memories PS2 Review

A reimagination of the almost legendary original, Silent Hill: Shattered Memories follows Harry Mason around the sleepy town of Silent Hill as he looks for his missing daughter Cheryl. Unfortunately for him, the town has a penchant for making him run...

A triumphant port that still doesn't fix a flawed game.

Silent Hill: Shattered Memories

Silent Hill and I go way back. In 1999, I was 12 years old and a total wuss. I couldn't handle scary movies or games, and gore sent me fleeing from the room – I couldn't even handle the Black Knight scene from Monty Python and the Holy Grail....

Slow-burning, mature storyline; intense and creepy atmosphere; psychological profiling actually influences the game; Wii version makes clever use of remote; among the best graphics, sound, and art design on Nintendo's console to date

Nightmare sequences can be frustrating; strict division between safe and dangerous segments means that the game often isn't as scary as it could be

This reimagining significantly alters the Silent Hill formula, but for those willing to put up with the occasional frustrating chase sequence, Shattered Memories is a masterpiece of atmosphere and storytelling that demands your attention.

Oddly memorable, but not outstanding

I was heartbroken to read a review in a now-defunct gaming magazine that said that Silent Hill: Shattered Memories was a good game but a terrible failure as a Silent Hill game. In my eyes, though, it's not as clear-cut as that. It ...

Mysterious and compelling; innovative features; some excellent music and audio design; twist ending

Inversely anti-game in design; basic gameplay is rather weak

I really enjoyed the narrative and thought it was the best Silent Hill in years. The only times I wasen't enjoying the game was when I wacking myself in the face with the cord connecting the Nunchucku to the Wiimote. This made the action sequences much...

A new direction in the endless fog....

After the disappointing Silent Hill: Homecoming last year I feared the worse with Shattered Memories. A game developed by the same team for the Wii and ported to the PS2. Sounded like a recipe for disaster, but gladly I was wrong.
