Steambot Chronicles (PlayStation 2)

It's hard to imagine a crazier name for an open-ended mech-driven adventure than "Bumpy Trot," but the good folks at Atlus normalized the title and changed it to Steambot Chronicles for domestic release. Steambot Chronicles is an interesting little...

I Love You, Irem! I Love You, Atlus! Steambot Chronicles was released as Ponkotsu Rohman Daikatsugeki Bumpy Trot in Japan. The chances of having a unique game such as Bumpy...

It's hard not to love a company like Atlus, who chooses to localize a variety of interesting video games. Their mainstay series, Shin Megami Tensei, is entirely different from your standard Square Enix RPG. But Atlus also publishes a number of...

Honestly, I'm the kind of person who finds the most value in a lengthy linear RPG. I wouldn't want to pay retail price for an "open-ended" game, because I generally feel dissatisfied with them, even if I do absolutely everything the game offers. This...

However, there is a downside. Do you avoid games like Animal Crossing or Harvest Moon where the gameplay is almost tedious and work like? There's quite a bit of that in here, like transporting materials or people across the countryside. Then again, if...

Atlus does a wonderful service to Americans by delivering one of the best role-playing games so far this year.

In the end, Steambot Chronicles proves to be a decent and unique gaming experience that takes sand box gaming to new heights. With all the combat, customization and multiple paths you can take Vanilla on, there's really nothing to complain about. Once...

It's been an interesting generation for RPGs, one that has seen more innovation than any other in the past decade. We've seen the genre's standard bearer in Final Fantasy go online, while more obscure series like Shin Megami Tensai have climbed the...

Overall, Steambot Chronicles is a tremendously ambitious effort that sometimes falls under the weight of its own innovation. You've got many choices available to you throughout the game, and most of them are done well. The rhythm game sections are done...

How do you classify a game like Steambot Chronicles? Is it Harvest Moon meets the Misadventures of Tron Bonn? Armored Core meets Animal Crossing? It's a bit hard to pin down a good comparison for a game like this, as there's a large variety of things...

And that ultimately is the whole style of Steambot Chronicles' gameplay--it doesn't excel in any one area, but there's a lot of it and it's all above par. I found myself playing more for the interaction with the inhabitants of the game world more than,...

You know, I guess I have to start with this game's Japanese title. That seems to be the thing that really made everyone pay attention to this game. Are you ready? In Japan, this game is called Ponkotsu Roman Daikatsugeki Bumpy Trot (which translates to...

A good amount of variety

None of the various types of gameplay here is very... well, fun ; The graphics are very unimpressive ; Dark Cloud 2 was a lot like this three years ago, and a lot better

If you haven't done so already, do yourself a favor and get a copy of Dark Cloud 2, which plays a bit like this and is a lot better. Steambot Chronicles isn't a bad game - it's just not very good.
