The DMR-BW880 is a fine recorder and player but needs to be less complex, have a better menu system and shed a fair few more dollars to be seriously competitive.

Superb recording and playback quality ; Feature-laden ; Well built and finished

Sheer complexity ; Outdated menus ; Pricey

As a device that'll do it all, the DMR-BW880 has most tasks covered and is one of the better feature-laden PVRs around at the moment. It's hindered by its own complexity though, making it generally unpleasant to actually use. We can see how many...

This box is a disaster! Stay away from it. It does nothing in HD decently except playback of BD titles. Way too expensive for DVD recorder and BD player. Everything else in HD failed for me.

BD Playback

HD compression, tuner resolution, Sony AVCHD incompatibility, Substandard quality of HD

Absolutely unforgiveable how can such a great piece of hardware be missing a SIMPLE software to playback media from the network. No DLNA client no SMB/CIFS windows sharing client.

Blue Ray, Dual Tuner, Menu

no mkv, NO PLAYBACK FROM NETWORK

I purchased the DMR-BW880 after a great deal of searching around as it offered me the best range of playback options _plus_ dual tuners and Blu-ray.

Easy to use, twin tuners, SD card reading

No wireless networking

Great unit, Takes a while and bumbling through selections to understand the menus but works like a charm. Everything I record is in DR mode. If I want to keep it then I remove the adds (simple)& than transfer to DVD. The transfer takes a little longer...

Great picture, All in one unit

Menu structure, eject & power button locations
