Red Faction: Armageddon (PlayStation 3)

If you're familiar with the Red Faction series, then you know Mars as a dangerous place where the regimes are oppressive and the building codes are lax. In Red Faction: Armageddon, alien infestation replaces armed uprising as the series takes on a new...

Red Faction: Armageddon

For all of its greatness, Red Faction: Armageddon does have some rather annoying additions. Not being allowed to backtrack at certain parts in the game is one, where you're fighting a large group of enemies and then suddenly see a timer pop up on your...

Destroying stuff is fun; Rebuilding it is even funner

A little linear compared to previous games; Story is a little confusing in the beginning

The game features a decent upgrade system with different tiers of abilities being unlocked as you progress through the story mode. All of these abilities are bought with salvaged goods that you find throughout the game and exchange them at upgrade...

Red Faction: Armageddon

So, after all of this talk, is it worth it or is this trip to Mars destined to fail like another Mars Polar Lander? Join the faction, my friends. Red Faction: Armageddon delivers on its promises, even with the uneven level design, soap-opera storyline...

Ground control

A varied and novel shooter experience

Quickly devolves in to cheap repetition

The dynamics are intuitive and add much-needed individuality to an otherwise familiar shooter experience. It gives you license to experiment with the gravity gun’s ability to attract any point A to any point B or blast the generous distribution of...

Review: Red Faction: Armageddon

THQ has quietly gotten into the habit of releasing some quality games over the last couple of years. The publisher that was once best known for releasing licensed kids and WWE games has put together an impressive stable of hit franchises. At the head...

Red Faction: Armageddon

In many ways, Armageddon is a much more polished game than its predecessor, the critically acclaimed cult darling Red Faction: Guerilla. Key here is the slick user interface, the superb music and great looking movie sequences.

The trainer, which gives you everything from unlimited health, ammo, no reload and unlimited sprint makes the game a ton easier, but by far the best cheat in the trainer in the ability to use unlimited nano forge, it's like having unlimited destruction...

Red Faction: Armageddon

A subversive game gets a dull sequel.

Everything Armageddon does, it does well, in the same way that a lobotomy victim might walk and talk just fine. Guerrilla’s dangerous boldness has been excised, and what’s left is an inoffensive marketing product meant to tie in with a cheap film and...

Red Faction: Armageddon Review

Things ain't what they used to be.

Nanoforge "rebuild" ability is cool; Ruin mode would be a great mobile app; decent cooperative multiplayer; some nifty new weapons

Linear, claustrophobic level design sucks; graphically unimpressive; lacks competitive multiplayer modes; very repetitive enemies

See, the real issue here isn't so much that Armageddon is a mediocre game -- which it is -- rather that it's such a letdown after its excellent predecessor. I'm not sure why Volition tried to reinvent the wheel here, but (while Armageddon's got some...

Red Faction: Armageddon Review

This third-person shooter differentiates itself from its predecessor with a surprisingly replayable campaign.

If you don't know by now, Red Faction: Armageddon boasts destructible environments -- one of the strongest elements of the game that makes it, well, fun. Running around in an explosion of rubble and flame becomes time well spent. On more than one...

Red Faction: Armageddon Review

I have fond memories of Volition, Inc.'s original Red Faction. Blowing holes in the ground just to see how far you could go, ripping buildings out from under enemies and busting through a wall to get to...

Great weapon selection ; Geo-Mod 2.0 is more than a gimmick ; Multiplayer modes are enjoyable ; Nano-Forge helps set game apart

Enemies have no personality ; No competitive multiplayer modes

I have fond memories of Volition, Inc.’s original Red Faction. Blowing holes in the ground just to see how far you could go, ripping buildings out from under enemies and busting through a wall to get to a multiplayer opponent were all pioneering...
