SEGA Mega Drive Ultimate Collection Review [X360, PS3]

Reviewed on the Xbox 360.

Over 40 games on a single disc ; Games faithfully ported ; Good Value for Money

Games have not aged well ; You may already have some of the games

Provides over 40 games from the 16 bit era, at a low price. However, many games have not aged well, and you may end up wishing you had left your memories of the games undisturbed.

Sega Mega Drive Ultimate Collection

There's more than just hedgehogs in this stellar 40+ game collection

Huge and varied selection ; Every Phantasy Star game alone is 100 hours of fun ; Crazy high value

You might own some of these already ; Reality at times lacking compared to memories ; Missing a few favorites

If you remember the 16-bit wars fondly, there's no reason to pass up this treasure trove, especially at a price that works out to around 60 cents a game. Perhaps some don't want this set because they already bought some of the included games on older...

SEGA Mega Drive: Ultimate Collection (PS3, Xbox 360) review

The SEGA Mega Drive (or SEGA Genesis, as it's called in North America) was, for a time, Nintendo's greatest rival for most of the '80s and '90s. What the black box lacked in horsepower, it made up for with attitude (most famously represented with the...

And while there are plenty of popular titles that could have been added to the collection, including Earthworm Jim, Gunstar Heroes, Splatterhouse 2 and 3, and perhaps a few games from the SEGA CD and Saturn consoles, there is still more than enough...

SEGA Mega Drive Ultimate Collection

Genius in its simplicity, this collection will allow you to revisit your favourite titles from yesteryear - albeit with a few notable exceptions.

Game saves. Offline multiplayer, especially co-op. Faithfully presented to make even sceptical fans drool

Unlockables are boring, apart from the nine games. A couple of other genres would have been nice

Ultimate? No. Fun? Yes!

Definitely more penultimate than ultimate...

You could try this, but you really shouldn't, the Ultimate Collection has a lot more on it.

SEGA Mega Drive Ultimate Collection

SEGA Mega Drive Ultimate Collection is well worth your money. Gamers brought up on the likes of Halo and Call of Duty might struggle to see what's so great here, but that's their loss.

Some nice bonus material ; Great selection of games

No modern extras ; The filter won't be for everyone

These quibbles are just that really - things that we would have liked, but not major flaws. SEGA Mega Drive Ultimate Collection is still well worth your money, especially if you loved these games and don't own a Mega Drive any more, or simply can't be...

SEGA Mega Drive Ultimate Collection Review

Sixteen classic SEGA games in one package. Can those games still get our attention?

Staggering amount of games on one disc ; Still very playable ; Excellent value for money ; The best retro compilation released to date

Contains some pretty poor games ; Lack of online multiplayer ; Won't appeal to everyone

To be honest I cannot think of another game available on any console that offers as much value for money as "SEGA Mega Drive Ultimate Collection" especially as you consider that the game has been released at a relatively budget price.

Sega Mega Drive Ultimate Collection

In around 20 years time, when we're playing PS8 or Xbox 36,000, I find it very hard to believe that we'll be playing compilations of the best games from the current generation. In fact, it seems far more likely that we'll instead be playing a larger...

Over 40 classic (and not so classic) Megadrive games ; Smoothing and 16x9 options for most games ; Save at any time ; Fantastic value for money in comparison to other retro services ; Achievements/Trophies should encourage you to try all the games ;...

Some games are simply awful ; Sonic and Knuckles link-up games not included ; No universal option for changing video settings ; Save states make some games too easy ; Will remind many gamers just how old they truly are

Of course, despite the awesome value for money, there's no denying that a lot of these games are pretty hideous nowadays, and no doubt many players will bemoan the non-inclusion of some of their personal favourites. At the same time, there's a fair few...

Sega Mega Drive Ultimate Collection

This game is one that I was most definitely looking forward to playing, so to be able to review it was a great opportunity for me. Sega Mega Drive Ultimate Collection contains a grand total of forty-nine games, of which forty are available on startup,...

Some really good classics ; A lot of different games in one package

Nothing new added to games ; Could've had more variety rather than series
