Sonic & Sega All-Stars Racing Review

Super Mario Kart remains one of my favorite games of all time and to this day, the cartridge still sits right next to the SNES in my bedroom. On the one hand, when it comes to racers featuring real cars and real locations, I really only have the time...

Sonic and Sega All-Stars Racing is colorful and fun, for one player or multiple players. That's probably all that needs to be said. It has a few quirks and it's not quite as polished as I would've liked - the gameplay lacks refinement - but for the...

Sonic & Sega All-Stars Racing

Nintendo's plucky plumber has had a vice-grip on the console go-kart racer market. Crash Bandicoot, the animals from Madagascar, and even the Nicktoons have tried to usurp Mario from this throne, only to be completely outclassed.

Solid controls, good track design, and a Sega history overload make this a must-have for both racing and Sega fans. Just be wary of the announcer, he's cornier than Kellogg's cereal.

Smooth controls and a bunch of awesome tracks make this an exciting kart racer.

Tight controls with a great sense of speed ; Well-designed courses with lots of variety ; Good mix of characters, from the popular to the obscure ; Racing against friends, online or offline, is a blast ; Great visual style with a steady frame rate

Online play is limited to just racing ; No way to play through Grand Prix with a friend

A prettied-up Mario Kart with imaginative tracks... and no blue shell!

Cool mission mode ; Some fan-pleasing characters ; Great track design

The commentator should be shot ; Some obscure unlockable characters ; The weapons are a bit lame

It’s a close race between SASASR and Mario Kart, and far from choking on Nintendo’s dust, Sonic and co. clock in a respectable second place. This shouldn’t reflect poorly on the game however. So far, this generation has been dominated by serious racing...

Sonic & Sega All-Stars Racing is a blatant Mario Kart rip-off, but the hedgehog's emulation actually executes parts of the kart racing formula better. ...

I was so stoked to find Sonic & Sega All-Stars Racing on sale at Amazon. I was totally pumped when it arrived, and there was enough of a lull in shipments to be able to sit down and play this game. I was digging this game, and geeking out for quite a...

How does Sonic fare in his first driving lesson? (Xbox 360, PS3)

It's been a long time coming, but when SEGA announced they would plunge Sonic and his peers into the karting world, you would have been hard-pressed to find as much as an eyebrow raised across the gaming scene. After the continued success of Mario...

Did you enjoy Super Rub 'a' Dub? Yeah, me neither. This is where you join me in being pleasantly surprised that the developer of that title, Sumo Digital, has created one of the most refined kart racers I've played since the original Mario Kart....

Plenty of character variety ; Lots of challenge missions ; Stable online play ; Drenched in Sega nostalgia from the 1980s onwards ; Extremely satisfying handling ; Deep mechanics for experts ; Slick visuals

No saving during a Grand Prix ; Some characters share identical stats ; No speedometer ; Convoluted menu ; Framerate can drop at times

All Stars isn’t an overly ambitious racing game and won’t turn the kart racing genre on its head. It has some minor framerate issues and the varied character selection is at odds with the less varied bevy of tracks. What the game does successfully...
