Spec Ops: The Line Review: An Earnest Take on the Depravity of Man

An anti-war experience in the guise of an action game.

On paper, it almost seemsblasphemous to make an action game based onJoseph Conrad's Heart of Darknessand Francis Ford Coppola's Apocalypse Now.The two works are seminal commentaries on how war doesn't createvictors, but rather bastard children who are...

Spec Ops: The Line Review

Heart of Darkness meets Call of Duty.

Conrad inspiring Konrad; Strong narrative; Multiple endings; Choice? In war?; Late-game visuals and set pieces; Competent mechanics and multiplayer

Difficulty spikes; Monotonous environments; Little bits of absurdity

The gamer in me hated much of Spec Ops: The Line. The critic in me loves it. Like anyone else of two minds, I'm forced to decide which side of the line I stand on.

2K Games and Yager promised a disturbing and emotional story wrapped in a great action game. How does Spec Ops: The Line stack up?

Spec Ops isn’t about a war, protecting the world, or defeating some evil threat -- it’s about you, the effects of your actions, and events that are out of your control. The sum of Spec Ops’ unexpected story is an army shooter that makes killing people...

Spec Ops: The Line

After all the door kicking, screaming, blindfire, grenade tossing, and turret handling, a soldier always walks away from battle alive with a strong moral compass intact. This last detail is the most disparate departure from reality that modern military...

We don’t need to come to terms with killing people, because it’s all fun and games for us. Not so for Captain Walker, who must find reason and purpose in his rampage. Walking that long sandy, bloody road through Dubai is one of the most captivating...

[E3 2010] Spec Ops: The Line Eyes-On

We finally get to lock our peepers on a copy of Yager's third-person shooter. Impressions are just a click away.

There's plenty of promise in the set up, and if the chatter (which was convincingly delivered and actually surprised us at just how much there was and how well it sucked us in even if the impact of the actual cover-based shooting didn't). With cover...

This emotionally-charged shooter breaks the boundaries of how games like this can be made.

Strong, emotional narrative ; Excellent sound design ; Unpredictable action ; Tense firefights

Weird button combo ; Online feels unnecessary

Dubai? It's toast. Buried under tonnes of sand. There are people still there, though, and their story is..

Strangely, games can usually go the other way; great gameplay can give way to terrible graphics and even a weak storyline. But seldom the other way around. Considering this game was announced back in 2009, it’s disappointing to see so many quirks in...
