Star Ocean: Second Evolution (PSP)

Star Ocean: Second Evolution is an enhanced remake of developer Tri-Ace's Star Ocean: The Second Story, a popular PlayStation role-playing game. It shares much with First Departure, a recent remake of the original Star Ocean, highlighted by incredibly...

\r\n Finally, Nintendo has seen fit to deliver us from the horrors of Guitar Hero and Rock Band\'s intuitive gameplay, accurate mechanics, and great song selections. Thank God. Now I can stop pretending that I was having fun rocking out to Metallica...

Star Ocean: Second Evolution

You know those cartoons you used to watch as a kid? The sort where a band of plucky and unlikely teenagers wander round, getting into adventures and winning through using only naivity, their wits and a good dollop of luck? Well the Star Ocean games...

“Oysters”, get it?, 'cause it's an ocean.

Beautiful environments; Choices beyond good or bad; Great characters

Awful and over-used voice-acting; No way to track relationships; Innocent comments turning into insults

Old-School Evolved

Star Ocean: Second Evolution revisits the 32-bit classic with a new translation and voice work, but is it still worth experiencing?

The new animated bits are gorgeous, and the pre-rendered bits hold up well, but this isn't an especially amazing looking game, nor should it be given its age.

A traditional yet innovative take on the Japanese RPG.

Fantastic battle system; deep gameplay; decent replay value

Some visual blemishes; tons of cliches; load times can be tedious

JRPG fans should really enjoy Star Ocean: Second Evolution. Sure, it sticks to the formula in ways we've seen many times before, but at the same time it also deviates in ways that make it more than just another RPG. Clever new storytelling, updated...

Yet another drop in the ocean...

It's painfully slow for a PSP title at points, but other than that, it's as old school an RPG as you could wish for. The pseudo real-time combat makes for something a little more interesting than your usual random battles though.

Neat but no missing link

At least when it comes to games, you're not dealing with a new script, a confused director and your daughter pretending she can act. At its simplest you just tweak the old artwork and whack everything into some sort of magical emulation black box
