Ys: The Ark of Napishtim

When Adol washes ashore and awakens on the mysterious island of Canaan, the first words out of his mouth are, “And now my series is also in a PSP port?” It sure is, Adol. Now sit your ass down while this mother loads.

Ys: Ark of Napishtim on PSP maintains the pick-up-and-play appeal of the original, but turns around and loses a good portion of that same appeal with its long, frequent loading times. That’s not good for any game, especially not a portable one. Even...

Ys: The Ark of Napishtim

One of the few changes from PS2 to PSP is in the visuals. Gone are the anime-styled cutscenes, replaced by game-engine scenes that are still fine. The polygonal game characters have been replaced with the original sprites from the Japanese PC version,...

Ys: The Ark of Napishtim

Ys: The Ark of Napishtim is an action RPG (read: typical turn-based combat replaced with real-time) that appears on the PSP pretty faithfully to its console counter-part, which was itself a port from the PC. Why the world needed a portable version of...

Faithful port of a niche series ; Fun, if not a bit simplistic, hack-and-slash gameplay ; PSP exclusive extras a nice bonus for owners of the PS2 version

Weak visuals laden with load times ; At times, needlessly difficult ; Not much appeal for non-fans

It's an enjoyable hack-n-slash as well as a fairly faithful port. I enjoyed my time with Ys: The Ark of Napishtim (when I wasn't being frustrated by the excessive load times and difficulty), but unless you are a diehard Ys fan or dying for a throwback...

Ys: The Ark of Napishtim Review

Ys: Ark of Napishtim is the latest iteration of Konami's anime-RPG franchise. This time Ys makes its debut on the PSP, bringing a PS2-style traditional RPG experience to the best little PS2 emulator out there. The game makes the transition from home...

Interesting boss fights, cool adventure feel

Long and frequent load times, pacing is not friendly to portable play

Overall Ys: The Ark of Napishtim is an average game of a genre that so far is pretty scarce on the PSP. If you have been dying for more RPGs on the PSP and you plan on committing that amount of time, then you should be satisfied with Ys. It won't rock...

* This game requires your PSP's firmware to be at least version 2.50. The UMD disc contains an installer for version 2.50.

Ys: The Ark of Napishtim Review

Konami's popular RPG series hits the PlayStation Portable, and it's not too bad.

I think Y's: The Ark of Napishtim deserved to be a little more epic than what it got here. The game has some great presentation, a solid quest, and the kind of gameplay that's rather easy to get into instead of complicating things with ridiculous...

Ys VI – The Ark of Napishtim

When it debuted on PS2 last summer, Y's Ark of Napishtim was the first chapter in the Y's RPG saga to appear on US shores in over a decade. Out of pure nostalgia, many reviewers embraced the title's long-awaited return almost uncritically, despite the...

PSP allows you to play the game on the go

The game’s almost exactly the same as the PS2 version ; The new mode for PSP is tacked on and minor ; The story hasn’t changed … at all ; The voice acting is MIA

Y’s The Ark of Napishtim was an okay PS2 title. Now, it’s an okay PSP title with virtually nothing new to offer. At least the game’s low-res textures look better on PSP’s lower-res screen.

Y's: The Ark of Napishtim

Old school RPG goodness on the go.

The only thing that really puts a damper on the game is that for an RPG, it isn't very long. In fact, if you go from point A to B with very little interaction between character and side quests, you will find yourself through this one in no time....

Ys: The Ark of Napishtim

The classic action-RPG series is now available to go, but only the most patient gamers should take on this quest.

It's a simple and unpretentious action-RPG; satisfying power-up system; fantastic music

Obscenely long load times; very noticeable slowdown and lowered frame rate when too much is happening onscreen

Mini-Ys for all!

Ys feels right at home on the PSP, quite possibly even more at home than it did on the PS2, and we can't wait to sit down and re-explore the world on a teeny-tiny screen. Once we get that chance, we'll update you.
