Apple TV (2012)

Apple may or may not release a television someday. In the meantime, it offers a tiny $99 streaming box called the Apple TV.

The Apple TV lets you stream all of the movies and TV shows available in the iTunes Store to your HDTV on a rental or purchase basis, with purchases stored in the cloud. Netflix, MLB.TV, Hulu Plus, and a handful of other online media services are...

The Apple TV is a less useful box if you don't own other Apple devices. Roku's competing boxes are less expensive and offer more streaming services, including Amazon Instant, HBO Go, and Pandora. And the Apple TV doesn't work with non-HDMI TVs.

Those who've already invested in iTunes content and Apple hardware will find the Apple TV to be an indispensable living-room companion, and it's an excellent streaming-video box for non-Apple folks as well.

Apple TV (2012)Review

Apple's latest set-top box adds in 1080p support. Did you need something else?

If you're not an "Apple person" and are just looking for something to stream Netflix or YouTube, you may want to look into a Roku box. Roku can do that and much more, and with less expensive hardware. But if you're ensconced in Apple goodies and iTunes...

Apple TV (2012)

Two years later the set-top box Apple TV is back, and it's new and improved. An overhauled iOS-like interface gives the Apple TV a fresh menu system, but that's available to last-gen Apple TV owners through a software update. Still, the new model...

Supports 1080p output. Clean, attractive, easy-to-use interface. Excellent iPad, iPhone, and iPod touch integration

Streaming media services are limited. No Hulu Plus

The new Apple TV is just a 1080p version of the old Apple TV with updated firmware, but it's still one of the best ways to watch your videos on your HDTV.

"It's apple - so it's obviously a good product."

It's apple - obviously it's overpriced. I love APPLE products to the bitter end, and I almost feel bad for saying this since I'm typing from a MacBook BUT this is just another overpriced apple accessory. It offers less and is 50% more than the Roku, so...

Does what it says it does. Easy to use, looks nice, HD, it's apple.

PRICE PRICE PRICE! No HULU, No Amazon Prime. HULU offers ALOT of great shows for 7 bucks a month, most from cable.

"Apple keeps making it better. Especially AirPlay."

The Apple TV is a good little box o'streaming. It's built in native services is fairly small, especially when you consider the absence of Hulu Plus (which I use constantly). However, when you consider airplay on an iPad of iPhone, it is possible to...

Streams things seamlessly, simple interface, easier to work and lower power usage compared to an HTPC, and when you consider AirPlay, nearly as flexible.

Limited in native services, and not as quickly updated for new services as I'd like.

"Perhaps the most useless gadget I have ever bought!"

A device loaded with commercials from Apple related stores and with very little utility. My recommendation is not to buy. This is the worst Apple product I have ever bought.

None that I have found.

Should be given away as a loss leader to sell Apple i-Tune store wares and related products. If you already have a smart TV or a w-fi activated DVD there is really no great advantages to gain from this little device,. No HMDI cable included.

"AirPlay/Mirroring sets it above the rest!"

I happen to own both the Apple TV and the Roku Box. Both are awesome devices. However I would have to give the edge to the Apple TV, only because of AirPlay/Mirroring. I can view and interact with anything on my iPad. Gaming, apps, internet, etc. is...

To get the most out of this HAVE to have another iOS device. (iPhone/iPad/iPodtouch)

"We love Apple TV"

This is the perfect device for us with all of the content that we would ever want to use. The ease of use is phenomenal and the updates to the OS which add more features are a great part of what we love about it rather than having to purchase new...

The OS and the content are updated frequently. It offers every service we desire without having to purchase a new device. The picture is gorgeous. We use it daily.

None that we've experienced

"Awesome, but..."

Disclaimer: I have a Mac as my primary computer, iPad 2, and iPhone 4. I also have an Acer netbook that I use regularly and two rooted Android phones, and until recently, had an HP laptop as well. I'm not a particular Apple/Windows/Android "fanboy"......

Airplay, HD video rentals from iTunes, Mac access via WiFi/wired network, iCloud, flawless HD video playback from iTunes

Currently just ten apps or "channels" to choose from.

"Awesome! First Apple TV for Me :)"

The only downside to this product for me is that I can't stream my movies that i bought from iTunes on my Apple TV from the Cloud. Having iTunes match is extremely helpful, especially if your computer is not connected to the same network as your Apple...

- Simple User Interface

- no additional video streaming apps
