Hands On: Belkin WeMo Switch+Motion Home Automation

We get up close with two of the options from the WeMo home automation line.

Inspired by his grandmother, Rudy Brown turned a second-floor bedroom into a home theater showpiece.

Belkin WeMo Switch+Motion

Belkin's switch and motion detector kit can add a bit of automation to your home

Allows you to switch appliances and lamps on and off using your smartphone ; Works with motion and time-based rules ; Supports ifTTT

Motion detection was a little sluggish ; App wasn't always responsive when creating rules ; Physical size can impede adjoining outlets

The Belkin WeMo Switch+Motion is a basic home automation kit comprised of a switch and a motion detector. It allows you to control the on and off state of anything you plug into it directly from your phone, via motion, and even remotely over the Internet.

Belkin WeMo Switch+Motion

At the most basic level, consumer-based home automation devices allow you to switch things on and off through a variety of means. Belkin's WeMo Switch+Motion is such a device (and a modular system). Appliances that are plugged into it can be controlled...

Review: turn your lights on and off with your iPhone and the Belkin WeMo Switch + Motion

WeMo home automation system from Belkin hopes to make switching a light on and off remotely via iPhone as simple as being there.

Brings home automation a step closer; simple and intuitive iOS app; ability to create rules and schedule events; modular system offers room to add more rooms and appliances

Mixed results based on customer reviews and home set-ups; support could be better, particularly information on IFTTT; additional Motion senses are available without paying for the WeMo Switch; cheaper alternatives

While more costly than some options, programmable timer switches or timer plugs for instance, the WeMo system is a worthy option, thanks to its simplicity and scalability. While it may not keep the bad guys from your doors or windows, it does offer...

Review: Belkin WeMo Switch and Motion Sensor

There are a couple of products to concentrate on for this review, the WeMo Switch, and the WeMo Switch and Motion. You will need to download the WeMo app to your iPhone or iPad (there is no Android version yet, but will be available in July), get a...

Automates home appliances, piece of mind when out of home; very easy set up

Need a few switches to cover all devices

Overall we found the process of set up and go easy. The application of the devices is also easy, that we would argue even a hardcore technophobe wouldn’t have much problems setting it up.

I currently have the motion sensor Velcro'd to the ceiling on my outside porch, with the wire running into the house. In my bedroom I have the switched outlet hooked up to a rotating lamp. I have a rule setup so when there's motion the lamp will...

Easy enough for almost any end user to setup. IFTTT integration is nice, but if your internet goes down you lose that ability. They have an interesting product lineup, can't wait to see more devices

The motion sensor is very sensitive, and there's no way to adjust it. It has a tendency of sensing motion when there is none, which depending on what you're using it for could be an issue. Also, the wall warts are HUGE, expect to completely lose your...

wifi control

used only with app devices. mini and iphone. might want to check out belkin site as they have better instructions for setup and others are helping make scripts for them.

Easy setup ; small light to show power to plug ; standard plug size

Devices are on the bulky side of things ; Your router password can not have special characters

Works good.

Farly easy to setup. Pretty much plug and play ; It might be very confusing for people who does not understand how Wi-Fi works ; Once WeMo device is plugged in as factory reset condition, it will have it's own SSID and can be connected like AP ; Power...

I don't know if it was just me, but both infrared sensor and remote switch was not factory reset. I had to factory reset for them to be recognized by WeMo app ; There is no WeMo app for desktop (PC or MAC). There are some 3rd party solutions, but did...
