Netgear Digital Entertainer HD EVA8000

We like Netgear's EVA8000—a lot. Its industrial design fits in with the rest of our AV gear, its user interface is as elegant and polished as it is easy to use, it supports resolutions up to 1080p with an HDMI port, and that's just the beginning. But...

Interface support for popular Internet media; program guide and PVR for PC TV tuners

No Rhapsody support; crashed once during testing

Like MediaGate’s product, the EVA8000 can act as a USB host, but its port is conveniently located right up front. And unlike the MG-350HD, Netgear’s box can stream digital photos and digital music at the same time (it loaded images much faster, too)....

This bulky box sends all kinds of media from your PC to your TV — even protected iTunes and Windows Media music. Unfortunately, standard-def video

Comes with HDMI and analog cables. Record and play TV shows (if your PC has a tuner). Streams Internet radio, YouTube, and Flickr galleries

Nearly as large as a cable box. Ugly interface is no match for Apple TV. Queued media starts slowly. Doesn't auto-update when you add media to your PC

I've tried a number of media centers over the years. And, sadly, in large part, they've stunk big time – mostly due to uneven performance as the device and the PC seemed less interested in meshing together and more in protecting their own “turf.”

Allows you to easily view content from your PC; connects directly to the internet

Lacks a hard drive; relies on PC; slow to load iTunes content

While most Windows-based Media Centers are geeky at best, Netgear's EVA8000 doesn't need to make any apologies for what it can do.

Supports both Apple and Windows Media DRM, Can work as a DVR

Setup menu is hard to get to, Occasional stutter on 1080p high-def content

The pricey EVA8000 offers versatile features and DRM support that you won't find anywhere else.

Bridging the TV/PC Gap

Suddenly, with the advent of Apple TV, it seems everyone wants a wireless media extender to stream files from a computer to the TV. Apple TV is easy to set up, fairly small, and an excellent product for iTunes users. By contrast, the Netgear Digital...

Very versatile media extender. Plays lots of DRM-protected files. Can access YouTube and Flickr over the Internet. Records TV via your computer. Plays content directly off USB drives.

Crashes more than Billy Joel. The complex setup process may prove tricky even for networking pros. Interface graphics and device itself are ugly. No hard drive. Can't auto-update its media library.

Setting it up was a nightmare, the device crashed easily, and it isn't attractive, to boot. Still, when it's up and running, the product has an impressive feature set. If Apple TV is for the iPod-familiar, hands-off user, then the Netgear is for the...

NetGear EVA8000 Digital Entertainer HD

Editors' note : The rating on this review has been lowered due to changes in the competitive marketplace.

Extensive format support for a wide variety of audio and video files, including high-def content; streams purchased iTunes songs from Windows PCs; lightning-fast onscreen user interface; streams YouTube videos, public Flickr photo galleries, and...

No 802.11n Wi-Fi, and wireless performance was not flawless; protected iTunes songs take 15 seconds to load; interface isn't quite as simple as Apple TV's; would occasionally freeze up and require unplugging and plugging back in; large compared to...

While it's not as slick as Apple TV and its performance isn't flawless, the Netgear EVA8000's awesome array of features should delight tech-savvy digital media hounds.

Netgear Digital Entertainer HD EVA8000

The Netgear Digital Entertainer HD is functionally superior to the Apple TV but lacks Apple's seamless integration.

Supports multiple video formats ; Easily finds media content on your PC ; Plays back YouTube videos ; Internet radio support ; HDMI port

Struggles with 1080p files ; Basic setup mode is time-consuming ; Remote is too small

Review: Netgear Digital Entertainer HD EVA8000

Digital entertainment is becoming very popular and people don't want to sit in front of a computer to watch it. Recently several devices have come out that give you the ability to show video, music and pictures from your computer on your TV. The...

"Great for wired video streaming!! Lots of features!!"

I am hoping that they will put out another firmware patch to addres some clunkyness with RSS and UTube feeds. Upgrading the USB to allow USB wireless N or G would be cool, if techically possible. This unit is too nice and too expensive not to continue...

I have had this unit for 8 months now and can access all shared media from the PC on my network. Will play ISO, AVI and VOB formats. Just rip your DVDs to a USB, NAS unit or media server and away you go.

Does not support 1GB wired and Draft N wireless. In 100 yr old house, wireless G and N Routerscould not push signal from rear upstairs to front living room. Relocated Terastation NAS to shared gigabit switch in living room and all is streaming well
