Onkyo TX-NR636 review: Features and sound in equal measure

Let me pose to you a potentially leading question: is there any piece of home-theater equipment less sexy than a receiver? Useful, oh yes -- and it pays to get a good one -- but most of them are very, very unsexy. The Onkyo TX-NR636 isn't quite an...

The Onkyo TX-NR636 has a laundry list of features including Dolby Atmos support and High-Resolution Audio streaming; HDMI 2.0 and HDCP 2.2 means the receiver is potentially more future-proof than its competitors; very good sound quality; a phono input...

On-screen display is minimal and difficult to read; imposing external design.

The Onkyo TX-NR636 offers a compelling mix of features and performance with "future-proofing" that is unparalleled for the money.

Onkyo TX-NR535 and TX-NR636 Receiver Preview

While the $500 TX-NR535 can pass through 4K/60Hz and has HDMI version 2.0ports, the $700 TX-NR636 adds HDCP 2.2 compliance for the best possible chance offuture-proofing your receiver purchase. Regardless, both of these receiversoffer fantastic...

The Best Receiver

We surveyed almost 1,000 users and spent 30 hours testing the top receivers with $35,000 equipment. The Onkyo TX-NR636 is the one we'd recommend for most people. It was subjectively and objectively the best-sounding of the bunch, and the only receiver...

Onkyo TX-NR636 7.2-Channel Network A/V Receiver

Onkyo's $700 TX-NR636 is a forward-looking AV receiver that's loaded with features, including HDMI 2.0 and HDCP 2.2. How does it perform? Dennis Burger finds out.

So, thumbs up or thumbs down on the TX-NR636 7.2-channel network AV receiver? I say thumbs up. Way up. If the company had only included subwoofer correction in its new, proprietary AccuEQ system, I would climb a stepstool to get my thumbs a little...

Onkyo TX-NR636 review

The TX-NR636 is a fantastic AV receiver with lots of 4K-ready ports, and Atmos support gives it a great (if expensive) edge over its rivals

Remote issues aside, the Onkyo TX-NR636 will almost certainly satisfy anyone looking for a modern, futureproof AV receiver. While the addition and appeal of Atmos will likely depend on your dedication to getting the most immersive sound experience...

Onkyo TX-NR636

Large-scale sound, Will go loud, Precise with sound placement, Well specified

Bass could be punchier and tighter, Lacks solidity, Dynamically soft

An impressively specified receiver, but its sound performance leaves us wanting

"might be good if it wasn't fautly"

I had a Denon but desided to upgrade, read the review's on this amp, sounded pretty good. But I feel like a fool now, there is a problem with the volume control on the remote, it goes to full volume or to no volume. It has wiped out my wireless...

"Outstanding connectivity to Interwebs and automated home"

I have owned this Onkyo for a month and it is perfect for highly automated homes. It has features I didn't expect: * An Ethernet cable that lets me control it remotely and it to connect to the outside world * A Vera2 Mios home automation controller...

Can't beat it.

For the price point, you can't do any better. Great sound quality through my Paradigm speaker setup. More HDMI inputs than I could ever need...which is why I upgraded from my old Onkyo 800 series. Bluetooth works flawlessly with my Mac and iTunes. I...

Could use a little more power. I can max out the volume at some times. It's loud, but it could be a little more robust. My only complaint
