A/V receivers have become so powerful and feature rich over the last few years that upgrade decisions have become increasingly difficult to justify. But if you have a large collection of DVDs or use services like Netflix or Vudu to stream movies from...

Excellent audio performance ; Exceptional video upscaling ; THX Select2 Plus certified

Grey-on-black labels are very difficult to read ; No AirPlay support ; No digital outputs to support outboard DAC

Listening to the percussion-heavy “Piano Smasher,” from Blue Man Group’s DVD The Complex, made me us as though we were about to personally reenact the chest-burst scene from Alien.

Onkyo 2012 Midline Receivers Preview

It is easy to get excited about the $1000 TX-NR717 until you see what the extra $200 for the TX-NR818 gets you. Audyssey XT32, 13.5 extra pounds and 25 extra watts per channel, and lots more.

Onkyo has long been known for having the most features for the money in their receiver offerings and the TX-NR717 and TX-NR818 receivers are no different. It is easy to get excited about the $1000 TX-NR717 until you see what the extra $200 for the...

Home cinema audio is often neglected, with TVs getting all the attention. The truth is though, that you could spend less on a TV and more on your audio system and have a more enjoyable experience. After all, most of the problem with TV and movies come...

Movie and TV soundtracks are brilliantly rendered, music sounds fantastic, some great online features, Android and iPhone apps

Expensive, Onkyo just keep making better ones, menus can be slow and text input is a pain

Simply put, the best AV receiver we've heard. It rocks our world in movies, and music too - for the first time - and is truly worth every penny of its admittedly high asking price.

Onkyo's feature-packed AV amp is an absolute knockout

Extensive network features ; Potent movie sound ; Excellent picture processing ; Top-drawer build quality

No AirPlay support

Also on the back are eleven sturdy binding posts. These include terminals for the front, centre, surround and surround back channels, as well as front wide and front height channels for the built-in Dolby Pro Logic IIz, Audyssey DSX and DTS Neo:X...

Impressive power, features and functionality from this new Onkyo receiver

Solid build; looks good in silver; thorough specification; eight HDMI inputs; good picture processing; powerful yet refined sound; fine sense of scale

Unintuitive control app

Make no mistake, the TX-NR818 is a very capable amp for the money, but the bar hasn’t been raised to quite the same new heights as last year. Rival machines are waiting in the wings, so we’ll be interested to see how they stack up against this Onkyo in...

The Onkyo TX-NR818 is a powerful AV receiver, with some impressive options

One key con you missed on this receiver is that it cannot output any digital inputs to zones2/3, only analog sources. You can send a network or USB source to those zones, but not from any digital source connection on the back panel. So no HDMI, no...

Onkyo TX-NR818

I have a lot of complaints about its sound. I have a musical education, so good I hear distortion. But as a universal device, this receiver is quite appropriate. AirPlay devices do not use. My previous Marantz sounded more comfortable, we can say perfect.

almost perfect

Still an exceptional product.... just wish that it could have internal circuitry to convert digital signals down to analog as well considering it is necessary for some external functions.

Upconvert, power, clarity, input sectability, etc

Main issue I have come across has to do with down conversion and outsourcing to tertiary receivers. No optical out, and zones 2 and 3 only output line OR powered if there is an analog audio connection on that input. You can sort of trick it by...

I purchased the Onkyo TX NR818 due to its mass amounts of features it has at this sale price. I dare you to find another receiver at this price with something even close to these specs. Setting and configuring up is a breeze using the onscreen guide. I...
