Pioneer VSX-823-K review

The pitch for Pioneer's VSX-823-K ($400 street price) is straightforward: six HDMI inputs, built-in AirPlay, and not much else. That's more HDMI connectivity than the similarly AirPlay-equipped Denon AVR-E300 ($400) offers, and AirPlay gives it an edge...

The Pioneer VSX-823-K has a good feature set, with six HDMI inputs, including an MHL-compatible front-panel input. It has built-in networking, with AirPlay compatibility and integrated support for Pandora, Internet radio, and DLNA. The Pioneer also...

Sony's competing STR-DN840 offers built-in Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and AirPlay for $50 more. Other networked AV receivers offer more streaming services, such as Spotify and SiriusXM. The included one-year warranty is also half as long as most manufacturers...

The Pioneer VSX-823-K is a good deal for AirPlay fans looking for lots of HDMI connectivity, but it falls short on wireless features like Wi-Fi and Bluetooth.

Lasted 4 months

Sent it to Pioneer for check up. Heat light always coming on causing it to shut down. Came back not repaired. Tried 2 of my other receivers in the same spot in case it was a speaker, they worked fine. Now stuck with a $300 paper weight. How can a...

AirPlay implementation is poor, and cuts out constant

Returning back to BestBuy tomorrow.

- Good number of HDMIs - Good set of wireless features such as Airplay, HTC Connect and DLNA

Very poor AirPlay implementation, my iPhone 5s constantly cuts out after 1-2 minutes of playback of music. I will have to return it and go with a Sony STRDN-840 instead. I updated to the October 2013 firmware and still the issue was not resolved.
