The NAD PP 3's measured performance shows very little evidence of its costing only $199. Used as a standalone phono preamplifier, it is a superb value, with low distortion and high overload margins. The USB output is very useful for digitizing LPs, and...

NAD PP3 DIGITAL PRE AMPLIFIER USB

Does what it says - high quality conversion of phono output to digital over USB. High frequency buzz on signal was tracked to switch-mode power supply on laptop (isolated by removing earth from power supply).

Only minor design issue was the small switch on the back to swap between MM/MC inputs - it needs to be positively moved to one or the other position, as there seems to be a somewhere inbetween position that doesn't work

I am extremely pleased with my unit, But.. see below

The instructions were non exsistantas to how to get optimum results! Before I started out on this project I took great care to isolate my turntable by mounting it on a board fastened to an outside wall and when recording leave it to get on with its job...

NAD PP3 DIGITAL PRE AMPLIFIER USB

Easy to set up straight out of the box. The software provided for converting the input is the 'Lite' version, but adequate for most purposes (it was for me, anyway). Small, neat unit.

No on/off switch.

Product Specifications

Convert Your LPs to MP3 or WAV Files NAD's PP-3 Digital Phono Preamplifier combines NAD's award winning PP-2 MM / MC Phono Preamp with a high quality Analog-to-Digital converter with USB interface. This sophisticated and cost-effective component allows you to enjoy your vinyl LP collection through your normal stereo system, but also gives the option to record your LPs into todays digital formats. The additional line input allows any other analog source, including FM radio, tape, or the analog output of your CD player, to be converted to the digital USB format. This also 'adds back' the input on your amp or receiver used up by the PP-3. This extra functionality makes the PP-3 an easy upgrade from the PP-2, while maintaining the PP-2's extraordinary performance and sound quality. The included VinylStudio Lite PC Software makes it easy to copy your LPs directly to the hard drive of your PC as either .wav or .mp3 files. Once your analog LPs are digitized, you can burn the music files onto CD-Rs or transfer them to portable music players. The PP-3 also includes the same analog outputs as the PP-2 for great sound quality when connected to an analog stereo system. Low-Noise Design The PP-3 consists of a low noise, discrete moving coil preamp followed by a low noise op amp-based RIAA moving magnet stage incorporating a 12 dB-per-octave infrasonic filter to attenuate turntable 'rumble' noise. The output feeds the line output as well as the soft clipped input of an A/ D converter with USB Output. This can be connected to any PC for recording from vinyl disc to your PC hard drive. Moving Coil Section The moving coil preamp is a four-transistor low distortion amplifier noise-optimized for the very low source impedance of moving coil cartridges. It uses ultra-low intrinsic base resistance transistors and operates two of them in parallel push pull for a further 3 dB lowering if input noise. Its input noise is typically 60 nV, or 78 dB below 0.5mV (RIAA an
