Sony STR-DN1030

Sony's recent A/V receiver offerings have been somewhat a mixed bag. On one hand, they seemed to offer a good mix of features and connectivity for the money. On the other hand, the inclusion of too many useless bells ‘n whistles mucked up their...

Good headroom and dynamics ; Inclusion of both Wi-Fi and Bluetooth unique in its price class ; Excellent mix of networking, USB, and Airplay features ; Good video pass-through quality for its price point

GUI navigation and set up menus still miserable ; Sounds less good for music than for movies ; No on-screen menu overlay

Sony STR-DN1030

Every year there's usually one new AV receiver feature worth considering. This year it's built-in Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, and the Sony STR-DN1030 is the only receiver at this price that supports both wireless networking features. It's surprising that Sony...

The Sony STR-DN1030 is the only midrange receiver with built-in Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. Its networking features also include built-in AirPlay, plus plus support for DLNA, Pandora, and Slacker. And the STR-DN1030's sound quality is excellent.

The STR-DN1030's five HDMI inputs are fewer than many competitors have. The user interface is particularly bad and makes it frustrating to use some of the streaming music services. And the STR-DN1030's multiroom functionality is very limited.

The Sony STR-DN1030 is the only midrange AV receiver with built-in Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, making it one of best receiver values this year.

Sony STR-DN1030 AV Receiver Review

On paper, the Sony STR-DN1030 looks like quite an impressive receiver, with a feature list poised to make other $500 receivers blush. Among those features are built-in WiFi, Bluetooth & Airplay.

Built in Wi-Fi and Bluetooth ; Wide range of Network Features

Limited Zone 2 Functionality ; Confusing Remote ; Poor User Interface

Sony STR-DA4400ES

Primarily, you want to ensure that your A/V receiver is capable of decoding the formats that are going to come from all your other inputs, so the 4400ES should be sufficient for most new HD home theater setups. Better value for money is available...

Sony STR-DA5400ES Audio/Video Receiver

This model is one of Sony's most feature-laden receivers. When watching DVDs, the audio was "right on and the dynamics were big without sacrificing the micro-dynamic details that provide the realistic sensation of being in the middle of things."...

Ergonomically, the Sony is pretty good. My main gripe would be with the remote. Specifically, the backlighting is limited and only comes on after you begin using it. Unlike better remotes, this one does not have a light that comes one when you pick it...

Overall, the Sony STR-DA5400ES is a well-built, easy to use, good-sounding receiver. In the world of $2,000-dollar receivers, the Sony's sound quality was very good, as was its video quality. There are many excellent receivers in this field and the...

Sony STR-DA5400ES A/V Receiver

Like the old canine joke punch-line, “Because he can,” electronics designers seem to be adding greater functionality and features to their A/V receivers more because they can rather than because consumers need them, want them, or are likely to use them.

Like the old canine joke punch-line, "Because he can," electronics designers seem to be adding greater functionality and features to their A/V receivers more because they can rather than because consumers need them, want them, or are likely to use them.

The programmable remote is exceptionally well organized, which is a good thing since it's not backlit. The input buttons do light after you push them, which is back-assward in my opinion. Sony wisely put the TV Volume and TV Channel up/down rockers...

"Wonderful receiver!"

It is all about sound quality for me and this receiver shines in this aspect. Previously I had a Yamaha 667 and this receiver quite frankly blows the Yamaha out of the water in my opinion. The Sony brings a more rich and full sound stage. Also you...

Sound Quality (which to me is what it is all about anyway!)

GUI is slow and cumbersome and aesthetically lacking.

"It ain't all peaches and cream with this receiver."

I started out looking for an upgrade to my Kenwood HTiB receiver I purchased in the late 90s. The Kenwood system has been an incredible value, but it doesn't have HDMI inputs with passthrough so I've had to hook up most components into my HDTV and then...

Good sound when it worked.

Everything else.
