Sony STR-DN1040 7.1 A/V Receiver

When I turn on the Sony STR-DN1040 and am greeted by a colorful, interactive full screen graphical interface, I am surprised. It is even in high definition! Someone has actually been listening to complaints from users and decided to do something about...

Sony STR-DN1040

AV receivers tend to feel out of step with current technology: they're bulky, hard to use, and typically lack basic features that are taken for granted these days, like Wi-Fi.

The Sony STR-DN1040 is the most feature-packed AV receiver you'll find at this price. There's built-in Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and AirPlay, plus eight HDMI inputs, which is more than any of its competitors. It also sports a truly modern user interface with...

It's somewhat expensive and more than what most buyers need. The included remote is cluttered with buttons, sure to put-off nontechies. And Sony's automatic speaker calibration wasn't quite perfect in our listening environment.

The Sony STR-DN1040 is a truly first-class AV receiver, boasting tons of wireless technology and a pretty user interface, at a premium price.

Sony STR-DN1040 AV Receiver Review: WiFi, Bluetooth, and AirPlay Oh My!

The Sony STR-DN1040 is a big step up from the STR-DN1030 we reviewed last year. A new Remote, GUI, mobile app, and FLAC support are just some of the improvements Sony made. Read on for a full review.

Bluetooth, WiFi, and AirPlay ; Smooth user interface ; Great sound quality

Disjointed network/app control ; Poor zone 2 integration

Sony STR-DN1040 AV Receiver

The Verdict A feature-packed, all around stellar performer offering incredible bang for the buck. If I were down on my luck—jobless, hopeless, living on beans à la can—and absolutely had to buy a new audio/video receiver on a tight budget, how much...

"All the handshake problems you heard about. Stay away."

All the great features CNET described. Unfortunately CNET didn't describe the Handshake problems with cable boxes.

Really bad intermittent handshake problem with cable boxes. If you buy this you will be happy for awhile, until one day you have no connection to your cable box and can't figure out why. You may get it working again and then a month later same thing.

"Wished I had yours"

After reading the reviews I was really pumped about getting my new STR-DN1040 receiver. It appears you will get a great product or a lemon. I got the lemon. After 2 days it started loosing the picture on the TV. "Signal Lost". Then it would come back...

Tons of features

Serious HDMI Handshake issues

"Best Audio Purchase I've Made In Years!"

I'm no audiophile, but I know what my ears like to hear and this SONY STR-DN1040 delivers quality sound in every mode, TV, streaming, BD or gaming and really, isn't that the ultimate goal of any receiver?

Easy setup, Excellent sound, Great GUI interface, 8 HDMI inputs, WiFi/Streaming works great. It really doesn't get much better at this price.

Had to run the speaker setup wizard a few times before it got it dialed in. Some of the preset selection modes ie Sports, Concert etc don't take advantage of 7.1.

"This thing seriously rocks."

Previously I've had a high end Yamaha, high end Sony, and a mid-market Onkyo - the Yamaha and Sony were impressive, but the Onkyo began to fail after only 2.5 years of use, so it is nice to return to Sony at a lower price point, but seemingly with no...

The standout feature is definitely the networking aspect - BlueTooth, AirPlay, and WiFi makes this thing so convenient to use with ALL of my devices that it is simply heaven. The 8 HDMI inputs, MHL, and USB are just frosting on the top of the cake.

Only one issue so far and that is the sometimes jarring noise it makes when starting up - sounds as if it is trying to suck up all the electricity in the house. Well, that is a bit of an overstatement, but it is surprising.

"The Best Receiver I Have Had!"

I am not going to cover all the inputs or specs here; you can look all that up and decide if they meet your needs or not. I want to talk more about my experience using the receiver.

Pros: It sounds great
